The Voice UK Final Sparks Backlash Over Pre-Recorded Format
Viewers expressed frustration on social media as the 2026 grand final aired without a live audience voting system.
The grand final of The Voice UK on Saturday night drew immediate criticism from viewers at home over the show's pre-recorded format. Host Emma Willis welcomed audiences to the final episode, which featured the top four contestants competing for the winning title and a grand prize package.
The finalists battling for the championship included Frank Raven representing coaches Danny Jones and Tom Fletcher, Monique Nicholson-Porter from Kelly Rowland's team, Naná Aldrin-Quaye from will.i.am's team, and Cate McHugh representing Sir Tom Jones. Each finalist secured their spot after surviving the previous weekend's semi-finals.
However, frustration mounted quickly on social media platforms like X, formerly Twitter, as fans realized they could not vote by phone, text, or app. Because the entire season was filmed in advance, the winner was chosen exclusively by the studio audience present during the recording, sparking widespread debate about the lack of public interaction.
One disgruntled viewer posted on social media, "Love The Voice but I still say the public should be involved. No live shows, studio audience only. It's not a patch on the show it used to be. I think the artists have been let down by the format." Another questioned the purpose of broadcasting the series without live viewer participation, noting that the show has not featured a live final in five years.
Despite the backlash over the voting format, many fans still tuned in and praised elements of the broadcast, including the opening performance delivered by the coaches. Emma Willis opened the night by reminding viewers of the high-stakes rewards awaiting the champion, which include a recording contract with Universal Music Group, a vacation at Universal Orlando Resort, and a 50,000-pound cash prize.
Beyond the competition itself, Saturday's final marked a major turning point for the long-running television series. It served as the final appearance for presenter Emma Willis and coaches Sir Tom Jones, Tom Fletcher, and Danny Jones, who will not return for the upcoming season.
Emma Willis recently took on hosting duties for Strictly Come Dancing alongside Johannes Radebe and Josh Widdicombe, and will be replaced next year by Alesha Dixon and Stacey Solomon for the show's fifteenth series. Additionally, the iconic red coaching chairs will welcome new faces, with platinum-selling rapper Aitch and global pop icon Cheryl joining the panel as coaches for the next installment.
