Takuya Kai Traded to Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles in Sudden Cash Deal

The experienced catcher moves to a new franchise following a two-year stint with the Yomiuri Giants.

On October 30, the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles announced the acquisition of catcher Takuya Kai from the Yomiuri Giants through a cash trade. The sudden transfer marks a rare roster move involving a player still under a multi-year agreement, as Kai had remaining years on a five-year contract signed ahead of the 2025 season.

Kai's unexpected arrival in Tohoku is closely tied to the Golden Eagles' catching situation. Hikaru Ota, who has served as the team's primary catcher and appeared in 100 games this season, has stated his intention to exercise his domestic free agency rights, leaving his future with the club uncertain. Additionally, the team's veteran presence diminished with Hikaru Ito being left off the team's future roster plans for the upcoming offseason.

Rakuten general manager Kazuhisa Ishii addressed the transaction by noting that both organizations reached a mutual understanding. 'Both parties reached a decision upon agreement. Basically, we consulted with the desire to welcome player Kai,' Ishii stated regarding the negotiations to secure the veteran talent.

Kai began his professional career after being selected by the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks as the sixth pick in the 2010 developmental draft out of Yangshikan High School. He earned a spot on the active roster in November 2013 and eventually established himself as an elite defensive catcher, earning seven Golden Glove Awards and playing a pivotal role in four consecutive Nippon Series championships starting in 2017. He also contributed to international success with Japan, securing victories at the 2019 WBSC Premier12, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and the 2023 World Baseball Classic.

Following his tenure with SoftBank, Kai exercised his free agency rights to join the Yomiuri Giants prior to the 2025 season on a lucrative five-year deal estimated at 1.5 billion yen. During his first year in Yomiuri, he appeared in 68 games, recording a .260 batting average with four home runs and 20 RBIs. However, his playing time decreased significantly during the recent season, where he played in only 13 games with a .100 batting average, two home runs, and two RBIs, making only three starts behind the plate.

The surprising trade drew immediate reactions from baseball fans across social media platforms, with many expressing astonishment at the abrupt transition. For the Golden Eagles, a team looking to bounce back from a last-place finish, the addition of a proven veteran brings a winning mentality and much-needed leadership for a young pitching staff and catching corps.

The Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles have scheduled an introductory press conference for Kai on November 3 at 1:00 PM at Rakuten Mobile Park Miyagi, where the veteran catcher will officially be introduced to the local media and fans.
