Yokohama DeNA BayStars and Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks Clash in Nippon Series

The 2026 SMBC Nippon Series features an anticipated professional baseball championship showdown between the Yokohama DeNA BayStars and the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks, capturing the attention of fans nationwide. The opening game is scheduled for Saturday at Yokohama Stadium, with game time set for 6:30 PM local time.

Broadcasting and streaming options for the series include multiple platforms. U-NEXT is offering live coverage of games one through three, as well as games six and seven, providing uninterrupted viewing for subscribers without additional fees. Additional coverage is available through TVer and TBS television networks.

This year's championship matchup also highlights compelling former-team storylines. Both rosters include players who previously suited up for the opposing franchise, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the series as they face their former teammates on the game's biggest stage.

Among the notable players suiting up against their former club is pitcher Taiga Kamatani, who joined the SoftBank Hawks following the 2024 active-player draft after previously pitching for the DeNA BayStars. Following a minor right elbow procedure early in his tenure with SoftBank, Kamatani enjoyed a breakout 2026 season, transitioning to a starting role and recording a career-high eight wins.

Catcher Yudai Yamamoto, who spent years establishing himself with the DeNA BayStars and won a battery award in 2023, joined the SoftBank Hawks via a trade in May. Yamamoto quickly became a vital presence behind the plate, appearing in 55 games and hitting a career-high six home runs after the move.

The historical context between these two franchises includes memorable postseason battles, such as the 2024 Nippon Series. In that matchup, the DeNA BayStars dropped the first two games on the road before bouncing back with a pivotal Game 3 victory at Mizuho PayPay Dome Fukuoka, sparked by a crucial home run from Masashi Kuwahara that ultimately ignited a four-game winning streak and propelled DeNA to the championship.

As the 2026 series opens at Yokohama Stadium, fans and analysts will watch closely to see how these roster connections and historical performances influence the current championship race between two of Japan's top baseball clubs.
