The Syracuse Orange men's basketball team officially ushered in a new era on Monday night, securing a 74-58 victory over the New Haven Chargers at the JMA Wireless Dome. The matchup marked not only the start of the regular season, but also the debut of Gerry McNamara as the program's head coach.

Playing in front of home supporters in Syracuse, New York, the Orange controlled the contest to claim the 16-point win. The meeting served as the historic first-ever matchup between the two basketball programs.

Head coach McNamara reportedly planned to coach Monday's season opener despite the passing of his father, Gerald, over the weekend. Meanwhile, Syracuse played without Temple transfer guard Aiden Tobiason, who remained sidelined while nursing a hamstring injury.

The victory gets the Orange off to a 1-0 start as they prepare for the remainder of their early-season schedule. Following Monday's contest, Syracuse is scheduled to return to action at home on Thursday, hosting Central Connecticut at 7 p.m. inside the JMA Wireless Dome.

The game was part of a busy opening slate of college basketball action across the Atlantic Coast Conference and the broader nation. While various other programs across different conferences opened their campaigns with mixed results, the Orange successfully navigated their first official test of the season.

As McNamara and his staff evaluate the team's performance following the opening night victory, the squad will look to build consistency. With multiple games scheduled early in the year, the Orange aim to refine their rotation and establish their identity under the new coaching leadership.
