Sweden Traffic Police Crack Down on Illegal Car Lighting Known as Glimmers

Authorities warn that aftermarket auxiliary lights left illuminated alongside low beams violate regulations and can result in fines and mandatory vehicle inspections.

Swedish traffic police have intensified enforcement against a growing automotive lighting trend involving aftermarket auxiliary lights that remain illuminated even when headlights are switched off. Known locally as glimmers, these unauthorized additions have surged in popularity across the country, frequently catching drivers unaware of their legal status.

During a recent patrol on a residential thoroughfare in Umeå, traffic officers stopped a motorist operating a vehicle equipped with glimmers alongside standard low beams. The driver was issued a monetary fine of 500 Swedish kronor and instructed to remove the unauthorized equipment. Authorities emphasized that these glowing additions contravene the traffic ordinance.

While factory-fitted illumination approved under European Union whole-vehicle type-approval standards remains completely legal, aftermarket modifications that lack proper certification are prohibited. Officials noted that these extra lights can create dangerous conditions on the road. Björn Lidestam, a researcher at the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute, known as VTI, stated that vehicles should maintain a clear and standardized appearance without distracting surrounding traffic with excessive illumination.

In addition to immediate fines, non-compliant motorists face potential administrative consequences. Law enforcement officers possess the authority to mandate roadside vehicle inspections or issue deficiency notices for unlawful lighting. Repeated violations can trigger an official review of a driver's license suitability by the Swedish Transport Agency if multiple minor infractions accumulate within a two-year period.

The enforcement action highlights ongoing regulatory scrutiny regarding vehicle safety components and aftermarket modifications throughout Sweden. Authorities continue to remind vehicle owners that maintaining proper vehicle visibility and adhering to standardized lighting requirements are essential for preventing confusion and ensuring safety for all road users during dark conditions.
