A late-game surge by Portsmouth denied Vítor Matos and his team the chance to take the league lead.

Swansea City, managed by Vítor Matos, suffered a 3-1 defeat against Portsmouth at Fratton Park on Tuesday. The result prevented the Welsh side from climbing to the top of the Championship table, leaving them in fourth place with 26 points as the race for the league lead remains highly competitive.

The match was defined by a dramatic finish in stoppage time. Although Swansea controlled 62 percent of the possession throughout the contest, Portsmouth proved more clinical in their offensive opportunities. The home side opened the scoring in the 36th minute when Terry Devlin capitalized on a rebound to put Portsmouth ahead.

Swansea faced adversity early in the match when Stephen Welsh was forced to leave the pitch due to a leg injury. Despite the setback, the visitors maintained pressure throughout the second half. Their persistence was rewarded in the 85th minute when Zan Vipotnik successfully converted a penalty kick after he was fouled in the box by Regan Poole.

The momentum appeared to shift in favor of the visitors, but a missed opportunity by Ross Stewart, whose shot struck the crossbar in the 88th minute, kept the score level. Portsmouth regained the lead in the 92nd minute when Devlin scored his second goal of the night following a corner kick delivered by Odin Bailey.

Portsmouth sealed the victory in the final moments of stoppage time as Tommy Waddingham outmuscled Ben Cabango to score the third goal for the hosts. This result marks the fourth win in the last six matches for Portsmouth, moving them to 22 points and 10th place in the standings.

The Championship remains tightly contested, with only six points separating the first-place team from the tenth-place side. While Middlesbrough currently holds the top spot, the loss for Vítor Matos and Swansea City complicates their immediate path to the summit of the league table.
