A University of Illinois Chicago student was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon after allegedly attempting to stab another student on campus, according to university officials. The incident prompted a heavy law enforcement response and the precautionary evacuation of a campus building.

The confrontation occurred at approximately 12:39 p.m. on the second floor of Student Center East, located at 750 S. Halsted St., specifically along the walkway between rooms 605 and 606. University officials confirmed that two students were involved in the altercation, during which one allegedly tried to stab the other.

Despite the chaotic scene reported by witnesses, university representatives stated that the targeted student was not stabbed or injured during the incident. Authorities quickly secured the area, and university officials assured the campus community that there was no ongoing threat.

Following the alert, Student Center East was evacuated and remained closed overnight while police and investigators processed the scene. Business operations within the center were temporarily suspended, though the university noted that all other campus operations and classes continued as scheduled.

Federal authorities, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, responded to the scene to support local law enforcement with the ongoing investigation. Unconfirmed rumors regarding a suspicious object circulating among students were noted by witnesses, but neither police nor university officials confirmed those details.

Students recounting the events described a sudden commotion, officers drawing weapons, and instructions to evacuate the building immediately. While the suspect was swiftly apprehended by law enforcement, the incident left many on campus reflecting on safety measures and building access protocols as investigations continue.
