Mother arrested after violent attack on Nice nursery school staff

A 36-year-old woman was arrested and placed in police custody on Monday at the Clément Roassal nursery school in Nice, France, after allegedly holding a school director hostage and assaulting a teacher. The suspect, who reportedly has children enrolled at the institution, had scheduled a meeting with the director regarding a disagreement concerning one of her daughters.

According to Nice Mayor Éric Ciotti and prosecutor Damien Martinelli, the suspect locked the director in her office and subjected her to a terrifying ordeal lasting nearly an hour. During the confrontation, the mother allegedly produced a handgun and a knife. Officials noted that the exact nature of the firearm, whether real or fake, remains under investigation.

Reports indicate that the suspect carried out a simulated game of Russian roulette by pointing the handgun at the director's head and pulling the trigger twice without a round firing. She is also accused of holding a knife to the victim's throat and demanding that another teacher be brought to the office. When the second instructor arrived, the suspect allegedly aimed the firearm at her as well.

The violence extended beyond the office when the suspect encountered another teacher in the school courtyard. Authorities stated that the second victim was physically assaulted and slapped several times before the alarm was finally raised. The director also sustained a severe jaw injury during the ordeal. No students witnessed the frightening sequence of events.

Law enforcement officers apprehended the suspect shortly afterward in the street using surveillance camera footage. Although she was taken into custody, no weapon was recovered from her person at the time of her arrest. Both victims, described as being terribly shocked by the incident, have officially filed criminal complaints.

Local and national leaders swiftly condemned the attack. Mayor Ciotti denounced the episode as an act of unprecedented and exceptionally grave violence that has caused a major shock throughout the local educational community. Emmanuel Roux, the rector of the Nice academy, expressed his full solidarity with the victims, praising their composure during the terrifying situation.

French Minister of Education Édouard Geffray took to social media to denounce the aggression as intolerable. He stated that the attack occurred within a broader context of societal violence that must be collectively rejected, emphasizing that targeting educational staff while they carry out their professional duties amounts to an attack on the entire school system. An official investigation has been opened to determine the precise circumstances of the assault.
