Stephen A. Smith Criticizes Colts Owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon Amid Roster Changes

ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith faced heavy backlash from NFL fans after calling out Indianapolis Colts owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon for a lack of action during a rebuilding season.

During an episode of ESPN's First Take, sports commentator Stephen A. Smith turned his attention to Indianapolis Colts owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon, questioning her presence on the sidelines and demanding structural changes for the struggling franchise. The Colts currently hold a 2-6 record following a difficult start to the season.

Smith questioned the purpose of Irsay-Gordon pacing the sidelines during games. "What you on the sideline for? You just sightseeing? Do something! Get rid of somebody! Make a change!" Smith ranted on air, urging the organization's leadership to send a clear message that they are moving in a different direction.

However, Smith's critique quickly drew sharp pushback on social media from NFL fans and immediate correction from fellow analyst Jeff Saturday. Saturday fired back during the segment, reminding Smith that the front office had already taken major steps by parting ways with longtime leadership.

Irsay-Gordon fired general manager Chris Ballard on October 19 following a home loss to the Tennessee Titans, ending his nearly ten-year tenure with the franchise. In her statement announcing the firing, Irsay-Gordon explained that waiting to make a change would only delay the vital work needed to meet the organization's championship standards.

Following Ballard's dismissal, assistant general manager Ed Dodds took charge of personnel decisions and immediately initiated a massive roster retooling. The Colts traded eight-time Pro Bowl guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks and sent three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle DeForest Buckner back to the San Francisco 49ers ahead of the trade deadline.

Fans and analysts quickly pointed out these aggressive maneuvers on social media, labeling Smith out of touch with the reality of the franchise's ongoing total rebuild. Many highlighted that the team is actively parting ways with core veterans and reshaping its future under Irsay-Gordon's direct oversight.

Despite the heavy roster turnover, Smith also questioned the job security of head coach Shane Steichen, asking why he remains with the team if leadership intends to pivot toward a new era. Steichen and the Colts prepare to host the Dallas Cowboys at Lucas Oil Stadium as the organization navigates its transition.
