Stade Toulousain Manager Warns of Forfeit Risk Amid Injury Crisis

Ugo Mola voices deep concern over squad depletion as Top 14 clubs face an unprecedented wave of player injuries.

Stade Toulousain manager Ugo Mola has revealed that his team is dangerously close to forfeiting an upcoming match due to a severe injury crisis affecting French professional rugby. With roughly thirty players unavailable across injuries and international call-ups, the club's depth has been severely tested ahead of a fixture against Section Paloise.

The heavy toll on player health has sparked widespread debate within the Top 14, where overcrowded match schedules have placed immense physical demands on athletes. Mola pointed out that the situation is completely unprecedented for the club, explaining that regulatory requirements regarding the front line left him perilously close to calling off the trip to Pau. To mitigate the shortage, Toulouse brought Mohamed Megherbi back from Oyonnax.

The mounting physical toll has prompted prominent figures within the sport to speak out. Antoine Dupont previously noted that athletes are not machines, while young back-rower Oscar Jégou voiced concerns over a punishing calendar. Mola emphasized that players must take the lead in demanding change because their physical well-being is directly at stake.

"They must step up," Mola stated regarding the players. "Antoine Dupont does not have to be everyone's standard-bearer. Fortunately, a young player like Oscar Jégou realizes that at this rate, he will fall apart. The body is their working tool."

While clubs navigate these severe roster constraints domestically, the broader French rugby setup is also preparing for international competition. Head coach Fabien Galthié recently named a 42-player preparation squad for the upcoming November Nations Championship. Stade Toulousain contributes seven players to the national group, including standout talents Antoine Dupont, Romain Ntamack, and Peato Mauvaka.

Union Bordeaux Bègles leads all Top 14 clubs by supplying nine players to the national squad, followed by Stade Toulousain with seven. Despite these national team commitments, the heavy injury burdens carried by French clubs continue to challenge coaches as they balance competitive success with player welfare.

France enters the November window holding the top position in the Northern Hemisphere standings with twelve championship points. Les Bleus are scheduled to open their campaign against Fiji at Groupama Stadium in Lyon, followed by matches against South Africa and Argentina at the Stade de France.
