Union Bordeaux-Bègles Defeats La Rochelle to Secure Second Place in Top 14
The visiting team claimed a hard-fought 25-19 victory at Stade Marcel Deflandre despite early injuries to key French internationals.
Union Bordeaux-Bègles secured a crucial 25-19 away victory against La Rochelle on Sunday night in the closing match of the seventh round of the Top 14 season. Led by a stellar 20-point performance from Hugo Reus, the visitors controlled the pace from the start and built a solid foundation through strong defense and disciplined play.
The win lifts Bordeaux-Bègles into sole possession of second place in the league standings with 23 points, sitting five points behind league leaders Stade Toulousain. Meanwhile, La Rochelle dropped to fourth place with 18 points following their second home defeat of the season.
Despite the victory, the match was costly for Bordeaux-Bègles due to several injuries. The team lost Marko Gazzotti to a right thigh injury and experienced a late pre-match withdrawal from Sipili Falatea, raising concerns for both players ahead of the upcoming international window with the French national team.
La Rochelle also suffered physical setbacks during the encounter, most notably losing Antoine Hastoy to a twisted ankle early in the second half after he collided with Maxime Lucu. Despite tries from Jack McFarland, Eneri Lagivala, and a late score by Ratu Naivalu converted into a thrilling finish, the home side failed to overcome a scoreless first half that left head coach Ronan O'Gara deeply frustrated.
O'Gara did not hide his disappointment after the final whistle, stating that winning a match with such a poor opening performance was impossible. He noted that his team lacked timing and vision during the first forty minutes, which ultimately cost them the game.
On the visiting side, prop Matis Perchaud praised the squad's depth and collective resilience in overcoming injuries and maintaining focus throughout the grueling contest. Perchaud emphasized that the team's ability to grind out a victory in tough conditions demonstrates significant growth compared to previous seasons.
With this important away win now secured, both clubs will turn their attention to the next round of fixtures. La Rochelle will travel to face Stade Français in Paris, while Bordeaux-Bègles prepares to host Bayonne.
