Stade Rennais and Olympiakos Play to a Scoreless Draw in Europa League
The French side secured a point against the group leaders during a hard-fought match at Roazhon Park.
The Stade Rennais Football Club played to a scoreless draw against Olympiakos on Wednesday afternoon at Roazhon Park during the fourth matchday of the UEFA Europa League league phase. Despite periods of sustained pressure and several scoring opportunities from both sides, neither team managed to find the back of the net, extending Rennes' sequence of draws in the continental competition.
The fixture, which was originally scheduled for Thursday evening, was moved forward by the authorities due to planned social demonstrations in France. This schedule change led local supporters to protest during the opening minutes by withholding their usual chants. On the field, the Greek visitors began strongly, controlling possession and testing French goalkeeper Brice Samba early through Gustavo Puerta and Leon Bailey.
Rennes gradually grew into the match, relying heavily on the pace and attacking runs of Mousa Al Tamari. The Jordanian forward hit the goalpost in the first half and later thought he had forced an own goal from Bruno Onyemaechi just before halftime, only for the effort to be disallowed due to an earlier offside decision against Al Tamari.
Following the interval, the French team increased their defensive aggression and offensive tempo. Bryan Reynolds and Al Tamari both created danger, with Al Tamari executing an impressive individual rush from his own half before sending a low shot toward the goal. Defensively, central defender Charlie Cresswell and goalkeeper Samba maintained composure to repel multiple attacking sequences from the Greek side.
Olympiakos responded with tactical adjustments that brought renewed energy in the closing stages. Goalkeeper Stefan Ortega made critical stops, including a stoppage-time save against a sharp effort from Valentin Rongier, preserving the clean sheet for the visitors. With this result, Olympiakos temporarily climbed to the top of the league phase standings, while Rennes provisionally settled into twelfth place.
Stade Rennais manager Franck Haise expressed satisfaction with the defensive solidity and overall team spirit displayed by his players following the match. "Considering the game we played, I think it is a good point," Haise stated, noting the difficulty of facing a strong opponent that had previously won all three of its tournament fixtures.
Both clubs remain undefeated in the competition as they approach the upcoming fixtures. Rennes will now turn their focus back to domestic competition in Ligue 1 before continuing their continental campaign.
