Sri Lanka and England Prepare for ODI Clash in Rawalpindi

Both teams look to secure their first victory of the tri-series on Thursday following defeats to Pakistan.

Sri Lanka and England are set to face off in the third One Day International of the current tri-series in Rawalpindi on Thursday. Both squads enter the fixture seeking a much-needed positive result after dropping their opening matches against Pakistan, a team that currently holds a commanding position to reach Saturday's final.

The upcoming match offers both sides an opportunity to recalibrate following recent struggles. Sri Lanka suffered a disappointing collapse from 210 for 4 while chasing a target of 306, ultimately losing by 37 runs. Meanwhile, England stumbled in their chase against Pakistan despite a strong start, falling short by 87 runs after sitting comfortably at 120 for 1.

This encounter follows a previous series in September where Harry Brook's English side claimed a 2-1 victory, highlighted by dominant margins of 89 and 223 runs, alongside a strong century from Sri Lankan captain Kusal Mendis at Headingley. Thursday's match in Rawalpindi provides a chance for tactical adjustments under evening lights, where pitch conditions and variable bounce have posed challenges.

Sri Lanka's projected lineup for the fixture features Avishka Fernando opening alongside Kamindu Mendis, with Captain Kusal Mendis behind the stumps at number three. The batting order is expected to continue with Pavan Rathnayake, Sahan Arachchige or Dunith Wellalage, Janith Liyanage, and Dasun Shanaka. The bowling attack is anticipated to comprise Sachindu Colombage, Eshan Malinga, Asitha Fernando, and Dilshan Madushanka.

England is expected to maintain a consistent starting eleven despite their recent setback. The English lineup features Tom Banton and Ben Duckett as openers, followed by Joe Root, captain Harry Brook, and wicketkeeper Jordan Cox. The middle and lower order includes all-rounders Sam Curran, Will Jacks, and Jamie Overton, supported by bowlers Gus Atkinson, Adil Rashid, and potentially Josh Tongue.

Spin bowling could play a critical role in the match. Sri Lanka will lean on options like left-arm orthodox spinner Dunith Wellalage and leg-spinner Sachindu Colombage to counter the English batting lineup. Conversely, England aims to adopt a more aggressive approach against slow bowling, acknowledging that they were overly cautious against Pakistan's spin attack earlier in the week.

Historical milestones are also within reach during the fixture. English batsman Joe Root is closing in on a major individual record, needing only 64 more runs to become the first English player and the 34th overall to reach 8,000 runs in ODI cricket. Additionally, Sri Lankan spinner Dunith Wellalage approaches a personal milestone of his own, standing just five dismissals away from 50 ODI wickets.

Reflecting on his team's trajectory, England captain Harry Brook noted after their opening defeat, "Rasanya ini mungkin kekalahan paling meyakinkan yang kami alami sejak tahun lalu… itu pertanda baik dalam satu hal," which translates to his assessment of the team's resilience and areas for growth. Both teams will hope that Thursday's contest provides a clearer indicator of their form ahead of the final stages of the series.
