Sorana Cirstea advanced to the quarterfinals of the WTA 250 tournament in Hong Kong on Thursday after securing a hard-fought victory against American player Mary Stoiana. The top-seeded Romanian triumphed with a score of 7-5, 6-1 in one hour and forty-three minutes on the hard courts of the tournament.

The match began with significant challenges for Cirstea, who currently holds the number 15 spot in the world rankings. Stoiana, a 23-year-old American player with Romanian heritage, controlled the early stages of the opening set and surged to a 5-2 lead. Having the opportunity to close out the set on her own serve, Stoiana was unable to capitalize on her advantage as the veteran Romanian found her rhythm.

Cirstea launched a powerful comeback by increasing her aggression and capitalizing on long rallies. Winning five consecutive games, she managed to level the score at 5-5 before taking the opening set 7-5 after nearly an hour of play. In the second set, the momentum remained firmly with the top seed as she quickly distanced herself from her opponent, conceding only a single game to secure the victory.

Reflecting on the challenges of competing at this stage of the season, Cirstea noted the demanding nature of the matches. The veteran player has enjoyed a productive year on the tour, capturing her fourth career singles title earlier in the season at Cluj-Napoca and reaching a career-best ranking. At 36 years of age, she previously indicated that the current season could be her last in professional tennis.

With this victory, Cirstea earned 54 ranking points and a cash prize of $7,025. The win also marks her 40th match victory of the season on the professional circuit, setting a new personal record for single-season wins in her career. Her previous best was 32 victories, which she achieved in 2013.

In the quarterfinals, Cirstea is scheduled to face Russian qualifier Alexandra Shubladze. Shubladze secured her spot in the next round by overcoming compatriot Elena Pridankina in a three-set battle. The upcoming match will take place on Friday, with both players vying for a coveted spot in the semifinals of the Hong Kong tournament.
