Sony Updates Gaming Forecasts and Details PS5 Strategies Ahead of GTA VI Launch
The company reported strong engagement metrics and provided new information regarding hardware trade-ins and upcoming software releases.
Sony has officially raised its sales and profit forecasts for its gaming division by 6%, citing a notable increase in third-party software sales and improved operational costs. The company is positioning its PlayStation 5 platform as a central hub for the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto VI, which is scheduled to arrive on November 19, 2026. Marketing efforts for the game have heavily emphasized the PS5, with Sony asserting that the title performs optimally on its hardware.
As the industry prepares for the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, Rockstar Games has confirmed that the title will require up to 212 GB of free storage space on consoles. Digital pre-loading for the game is set to begin on November 10, 2026, with PlayStation 5 users gaining access at midnight local time. While physical versions will be available in stores starting November 12, 2026, these packages will contain a digital download code rather than a physical disc, necessitating a stable internet connection for installation.
In terms of first-party performance, Sony reported that Marvel’s Wolverine, which launched in September, has exceeded 2.4 million units sold as of early November. While this figure contributes to the company's positive quarterly results, it remains behind the rapid sales pace of previous titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Despite a natural decline in PS5 hardware sales as the console matures in its lifecycle, Sony noted that its platform engagement remains robust, reaching a record 127 million monthly active users in September.
To manage the current hardware landscape, Sony has implemented adjustments to promotions and pricing to offset rising memory costs driven by the artificial intelligence sector. The company stated that it has already secured the necessary memory supply for its projected hardware sales in the upcoming fiscal year. Furthermore, Sony expressed its commitment to future hardware development, confirming that it is making progress on its next-generation platform, which is expected to include a successor to the current console and potentially a handheld device.
For existing PlayStation owners, Sony has introduced a trade-in program accessible through the PlayStation app. This initiative, facilitated by the website Back Market, allows users to trade in their standard PS5 consoles for cash payments directly to their bank accounts. Compensation varies based on the console's condition, storage capacity, and included accessories, with some users potentially receiving up to $400. This move is seen as a way to recirculate hardware while providing value to the consumer base.
The company is also incentivizing digital engagement through significant discounts on the PlayStation Store. Notably, the Control Ultimate Edition, which features PS5 Pro enhancements such as 4K graphics and ray tracing, is currently available at an 85% discount until November 21, 2026. These strategic moves, combined with the anticipation surrounding major upcoming releases, reflect Sony's broader effort to maintain high levels of user engagement and monetization as it transitions toward its next generation of gaming technology.
