Santa Monica Studio has officially postponed the release of the upcoming PlayStation 5 game God of War Laufey, moving the launch date from February 16, 2027, to May 20, 2027. Announced by the development team in a statement posted on X, the minor delay pushes the major franchise title out of the first quarter and into the second quarter of next year.

Revealed during a Sony presentation in June, the core franchise entry centers around Faye rather than previous protagonists Kratos and Atreus. The narrative follows Faye, also known as Laufey, exploring a mysterious setting known as the Everywhen that encompasses multiple mythologies and pantheons. In the game, Faye is portrayed by actress Deborah Ann Woll, starring alongside Jack Quaid, who voices a gelatinous cube character named Phranque.

According to the developers, the decision to postpone the title was made to ensure the game meets the high expectations of the community. Santa Monica Studio stated that the extra weeks will be utilized to implement final improvements and push the project toward its maximum potential.

The official statement released by the studio reads: "Since the reveal of God of War Laufey in June, we’ve been deeply grateful to see so much excitement for Faye’s journey through the Everywhen. We don’t take for granted the trust placed in our studio to make an extraordinary experience worthy of the passion and dedication of our fans. With this in mind, we’ve made the decision to delay God of War Laufey’s release to May 20th, 2027. We will make the most of each moment until then by putting in the finishing touches and pushing the game to its fullest potential."

While Kratos is traditionally known for utilizing brute force to solve problems, Faye relies on a more graceful, nimble, and swift fighting style. The gameplay remains a cinematic, third-person action experience true to the modern Norse era of the series, which began in 2018. The game is directed by Ariel Lawrence, who previously worked as a writer and producer on several earlier titles in the franchise, including God of War II, God of War III, and God of War: Ascension.

The delay represents a routine postponement for a major first-party Sony title, affording the creative team additional breathing room to finish production. Developers have confirmed that a future title centered once again on Kratos will eventually follow, picking up the overarching narrative thread directly where Laufey concludes its story. Until then, PlayStation 5 owners will look forward to experiencing the mythology from a brand-new perspective when the game arrives next May.
