Rockstar Games Confirms GTA VI Preload Details and Storage Requirements

Players must prepare for a 212GB download ahead of the November 19 release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S.

Rockstar Games has officially announced the preload schedule and storage requirements for the highly anticipated title Grand Theft Auto VI. The game is set to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S consoles. To ensure a smooth experience on release day, the developer is encouraging players to manage their console storage proactively.

The game will require up to 212GB of hard drive space, a figure that Rockstar Games noted may vary depending on the specific device. This substantial file size accounts for the expansive nature of the game, which features a map significantly larger than its predecessor, Grand Theft Auto V, and includes hundreds of accessible building interiors, detailed character models, and complex game systems.

Digital pre-orders for the PlayStation 5 will allow users to begin pre-loading the game starting at midnight local time on November 10. Xbox Series X and S users will also be able to start their pre-loads on November 10, beginning at 12:00 a.m. GMT, which corresponds to 4:00 p.m. PT or 7:00 p.m. ET on November 9 for those in the United States.

For those purchasing physical copies, Rockstar Games has confirmed that the boxes will not contain a traditional game disc. Instead, the packaging will include a download code. These physical versions are expected to reach retailers and begin shipping on November 12. Once players receive their codes, they can redeem them through their respective console storefronts to begin the pre-load process prior to the official launch.

The narrative of the new installment follows the criminal couple Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos as they navigate the fictionalized state of Leonida, which includes the iconic Vice City. While the game is currently scheduled for release on consoles, no PC version has been announced by the developer at this time. Digital pre-orders currently include additional incentives, such as the Vintage Vice City pack and a one-month subscription to GTA+.

Given the 212GB requirement, the game will occupy a significant portion of available storage on standard consoles. For example, on a base model PlayStation 5, this installation could account for more than 25% of the total usable space after accounting for the operating system. Rockstar Games has advised players to clear ample space on their drives to accommodate the installation as soon as the pre-load window opens.
