Severe Weather and Flash Flooding Impact Central Florida
A slow-moving upper-level disturbance and deep tropical moisture brought heavy downpours, leading to school closures and impassable roads across the region.
A slow-moving upper-level disturbance combined with unusually deep tropical moisture brought severe weather, heavy rain, and isolated thunderstorms to Central Florida, including the Orlando metro area and the Space Coast. The persistent downpours triggered a flood watch across east-Central Florida as saturated soils increased the threat of localized flash flooding.
Brevard County bore the brunt of the severe weather, where overnight rainfall totals reached historic levels. Meteorologists with the National Weather Service in Melbourne reported that areas like Palm Bay and Grant-Valkaria recorded between 12 and 15 inches of rain. Officials warned residents of extremely dangerous and life-threatening conditions as floodwaters entered homes, stalled vehicles, and covered roadways.
The severe flooding prompted widespread closures across Brevard County. Brevard Public Schools canceled classes for the day, while higher education institutions including Florida Tech and Eastern Florida State College also shut down operations. Additionally, Health First closed several physician offices, labs, and imaging centers, and L3Harris closed its offices. Kennedy Space Center officials advised staff to work from home due to flooded roads.
Emergency responders handled numerous calls for stranded motorists as streets became completely submerged. Palm Bay Police Department spokesperson Lt. Vincent Galioto noted that officers utilized small boats and pickup trucks to assist with potential rescues. Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey urged residents to stay off the roads unless travel was absolutely necessary.
In addition to inland flooding, dangerous marine and coastal conditions persisted along the Atlantic Coast. A high surf advisory remained in effect, featuring breaking waves of 5 to 7 feet, life-threatening rip currents, and small-craft advisories for rough seas. Minor to moderate coastal flooding also remained possible around high tide, compounded by elevated water levels following recent king tides.
Forecasters indicate that conditions will gradually improve later in the week. While lingering moisture will keep a chance of scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms in the forecast through Tuesday and Wednesday, the flooding threat is expected to decrease significantly. A much-needed drying trend is projected to arrive from Thursday through the weekend, bringing lower humidity and cooler overnight temperatures into the 60s.
