Severe weather warnings have been issued across multiple regions as powerful thunderstorms, heavy downpours, and strong winds threaten local communities and infrastructure. Meteorological authorities have raised alarms in several provinces, urging residents to exercise caution and prepare for potential disruptions.

In South Africa, the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), following advisories from the National Forecast Centre and the South African Weather Service, issued a level 4 impact-based warning. The alert spans from Friday afternoon until midnight, covering regions including Gauteng and the southwestern parts of the Mpumalanga Highveld. Affected municipalities comprise Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, and several others.

The severe conditions are expected to bring damaging winds, hail, and torrential rainfall, which could lead to localized flooding, property damage, and disruptions to essential power and communication services. Provincial and municipal disaster management teams have been placed on standby, with authorities instructing communities to stay indoors, avoid tall objects and bodies of water, and refrain from crossing flooded roads.

In addition to Gauteng and Mpumalanga, yellow level 4 and level 2 warnings extend to northern KwaZulu-Natal, the eastern Free State, North West, the western Bushveld of Limpopo, and parts of the Northern Cape, where extremely high fire danger conditions are also anticipated. Weather officials note that unseasonably hot to very hot temperatures are exacerbating the atmospheric instability across the country.

Meanwhile, similar weather disruptions are impacting international locations. In Bengaluru, India, the India Meteorological Department issued a thunderstorm alert for South Interior Karnataka, driven by weakening weather systems in the Bay of Bengal. The expected evening rain and gusty winds coincide with busy holiday shopping periods, prompting local traffic advisories around waterlogging hotspots.

Across the Tri-State area in the United States, commuters experienced tropical-like humidity, dense fog, and bands of heavy thunderstorms as a sluggish cold front stalled over the region. Unseasonably mild morning temperatures near 67 degrees fueled the storms, prompting flash flood threats for areas such as eastern Long Island. Meteorologists indicate that damp, unsettled weather will likely linger into Saturday before conditions begin to clear.
