Severe Storms and Tornado Warnings Sweep Across Multiple States
Recent severe weather outbreaks have triggered tornado warnings, structural damage, and flooding from the Southwest to the Southern Plains.
A series of powerful severe weather systems brought tornado warnings, high winds, large hail, and flooding to multiple states over recent days, leaving a trail of structural damage and prompting emergency responses. Communities from Arizona and New Mexico to Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico experienced severe weather impacts that forced residents to seek shelter.
In northern Arizona, a rare tornado watch covering more than 675,000 residents preceded a series of tornado warnings issued by the National Weather Service in Flagstaff. Severe storms struck Navajo County on Wednesday, resulting in significant damage and minor injuries in Overgaard, according to the Navajo County Sheriff's Office. Emergency crews and the American Red Cross responded to assist displaced residents and assess the damage.
Further south in New Mexico, a tornado warning forced residents in Deming to seek shelter briefly on Monday evening as the storm brought ping-pong to golf ball-sized hail. The New Mexico Department of Transportation reported downed power lines along NM-80, while sections of NM Highway 9 became impassable due to flooding. Meanwhile, Santa Fe officials reported significant wind and storm damage late Saturday after severe weather tore through the area, knocking down trees, damaging roofs, and scattering debris near Rancho Siringo and Camino Chueco.
In Texas, a radar-confirmed tornado prompted a tornado warning on Thursday evening in rural northeastern Kinney County. The storm moved northwest at 25 mph while Uvalde County remained under a flood watch. Forecasters warned that parts of Central Texas and the Hill Country could face substantial rainfall totals over the following days, compounding flood risks in an already saturated region.
Severe storms also impacted the Oklahoma Panhandle late Sunday night, leaving behind structural damage in Keyes. Images shared by local media showed barns torn apart and metal debris cast across streets following a tornado-warned storm that struck shortly before 11:30 p.m. National Weather Service personnel planned to survey the area to determine if a tornado caused the destruction.
Meteorologists emphasize that tornado watches indicate favorable conditions for twisters, while warnings signal imminent danger based on radar data or visual sightings. Emergency management agencies across all affected states continue to urge residents to monitor local forecasts, stay indoors during severe weather alerts, and avoid flooded roadways.
