Severe Weather and Heavy Rains Impact Regions Across South America
Recent storms disrupt community events, trigger emergency protocols, and cause fatalities and widespread damage in several countries.
Severe weather conditions continue to impact multiple regions, bringing heavy rainfall, strong winds, and thunderstorms that have disrupted daily life, traditional processions, and public safety measures. Meteorological services across different areas have issued warnings and safety recommendations as unstable atmospheric conditions persist.
In Ecuador, the Secretariat National of Risk Management reported that severe precipitation has left nine people dead and impacted approximately 46,000 individuals since late August. The emergency has affected communities across the coast, highlands, Amazon, and the Galápagos Islands, resulting in 37 destroyed homes and over 10,000 damaged properties. Officials noted that October concentrated nearly eight out of ten emergency events nationwide, including widespread flooding and landslides.
Esmeraldas remains the most heavily impacted province in Ecuador with over 20,000 people affected, while Guayas has recorded the highest number of adverse events, totaling 221 incidents. Authorities have documented casualties across multiple provinces, including Guayas, Azuay, Pichincha, El Oro, and the Galápagos, due to flooding, rockfalls, and structural collapses. Essential infrastructure has also suffered, with hundreds of educational establishments and health centers sustaining damage.
Meanwhile, in Venezuela, sudden rainfall interrupted the traditional procession of the Chinita in Maracaibo. The downpour forced the Servidores of Mary and National Guard personnel to activate safety protocols and return the sacred image to the Basilica of Our Lady of Chiquinquirá. Despite the suspension of the outdoor walk, thousands of devotees gathered inside the open temple to offer prayers and expressions of gratitude.
In Argentina, the National Meteorological Service issued forecasts for Formosa, anticipating strong storms, high humidity, and heavy downpours with probabilities ranging between 40 and 70 percent. Authorities reminded citizens of essential safety guidelines during severe weather, advising residents to stay inside secure buildings, avoid wired telephones and electrical appliances, and steer clear of flooded streets and riverbanks.
Across the Andes in central Chile, meteorological forecasters warned that atmospheric instability will continue into the upcoming week. Forecasters anticipate isolated showers in Santiago and potential electrical storms in the O'Higgins and Maule regions, with precipitation expected to remain light and concentrated during the afternoons.
