Severe storms and torrential downpours have triggered major flooding across several parts of Greece, with the popular vacation island of Rhodes bearing the brunt of the extreme weather. According to reports from the broadcaster ERTNews, heavy rain pounded Rhodes for 17 consecutive hours, inundating streets and homes primarily in the northeastern municipal region of Archangelos.

Emergency civil protection services issued an emergency alert via text message overnight, urging island residents and tourists to avoid non-essential travel and stay indoors. Social media footage shared by local residents depicted several roadways transforming into raging rivers. The severe weather prompted local authorities to close schools across Archangelos, Afandou, and the southern areas of Rhodes.

The relentless storms also forced emergency fire crews to respond to flooding incidents on the island of Samos and the port city of Volos. Furthermore, the Hellenic National Meteorological Service issued forecasts warning of continued heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, particularly impacting western and northern regions of the country.

The extreme weather events have severely disrupted autumn tourism across Greece. October proved to be exceptionally wet, with the National Observatory of Athens recording staggering precipitation amounts. On the island of Euboea, local weather stations measured 408 liters of rain per square meter over a four-day period, marking four times the normal monthly average. Meanwhile, mid-October recordings on Crete exceeded 1,000 liters of rain per square meter in certain areas.

On Rhodes, the severe storms caused significant damage over the weekend and into the early week. Local creeks overflowed their banks, washing away vehicles and damaging buildings. Emergency services intervened to pump out water and rescue residents, successfully bringing at least two individuals to safety from hazardous conditions.

Transportation infrastructure has sustained considerable impact, leading city officials to enforce multiple road closures in the Archangelos sector, including low-water crossings near Charaki, the Reni area in Stegna, and segments of the old national highway connecting Archangelos and Malona. Drivers have been cautioned against attempting to cross flooded roadways where water depth and structural damage remain unpredictable.

Looking ahead, meteorologists indicate that weather conditions will likely begin to stabilize by Wednesday, with early morning showers giving way to sunshine and high temperatures reaching approximately 72 degrees Fahrenheit. Mostly sunny conditions with temperatures ranging between 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit are projected for Thursday and Friday, offering a welcome reprieve as recovery efforts commence.
