Seahawks Defeat Previously Undefeated Chiefs 20-3 on Sunday Night Football
Seattle's dominant defense and a standout performance from Jaxon Smith-Njigba ended Kansas City's unbeaten run.
The Seattle Seahawks delivered a resounding statement on Sunday night at Lumen Field, defeating the previously undefeated Kansas City Chiefs 20-3 in prime time. Entering the matchup after losing three of their previous four games, the Seahawks relied on a suffocating defensive performance and a stellar outing from wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba to improve their record to 4-3 and hand the Chiefs their first loss of the season.
Seattle's defense stymied one of the league's top offenses, limiting quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City attack to just 213 total yards, 11 first downs, and zero trips to the red zone. Mahomes finished the night completing 19 of 33 passes for 165 yards with one interception, while the Chiefs failed to score a single touchdown throughout the contest.
"That's 12 as One football right there," Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald told his team in the locker room after the victory. "That's Seahawk football! That's Seahawk football! That's Seahawk football, guys." Macdonald praised his players for maintaining their focus and resilience despite outside noise following a challenging stretch.
Smith-Njigba anchored the offensive surge for Seattle, hauling in nine catches for 150 yards and a touchdown. Six of those receptions and 129 of those yards came in a dominant first half. Quarterback Sam Darnold completed 20 of 28 passes for 257 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, helping the Seahawks rack up 410 total yards of offense while converting 11 of 16 third-down attempts.
The Kansas City offense struggled to establish any rhythm, particularly without a functional ground game. Former Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker III was held to just 36 rushing yards on 14 carries against his former team. Compounding the Chiefs' offensive woes, kicker Harrison Butker experienced a difficult night, missing field goal attempts from 58 and 45 yards out.
Despite the disappointing loss, tight end Travis Kelce achieved a historic milestone during the fourth quarter by surpassing Tony Gonzalez for the most receiving yards by any tight end in NFL history. The Chiefs, now holding a 5-1 record, look to rebound next week against their division rival, the Denver Broncos, while the Seahawks aim to build momentum when they face the Chicago Bears.
