Kansas City Chiefs Fall to Seattle Seahawks After Kicker Struggles

Harrison Butker missed two field goals as the reigning Super Bowl champions suffered a 20-3 defeat on Sunday night.

The Kansas City Chiefs suffered their first defeat of the 2026 NFL season on Sunday night, falling 20-3 to the Seattle Seahawks in a lackluster primetime matchup. The reigning Super Bowl champions struggled to generate momentum on offense, managing only a single field goal while their opponents controlled the game from start to finish.

A key factor in the disappointing outing was the continued kicking struggles of Harrison Butker. The veteran kicker missed two of his three field goal attempts during the game, compounding an already difficult night for the Kansas City offense. Butker missed a challenging 58-yard attempt at the end of the first half, followed by a crucial 45-yard miss in the third quarter that would have brought the Chiefs within one possession with eight and a half minutes remaining.

With Sunday's misses, Butker has now failed to convert 15 kicks—including 10 field goals and five extra points—since the start of the 2025 season, which ranks as the most misses in the NFL over that span. Four of his misses have come from beyond 50 yards this season alone. Head coach Andy Reid took accountability for the overall performance after the game while addressing Butker's recent slump.

"He's been one of the most consistent kickers in football. He's off a bit, so got to fix it," Reid acknowledged.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City offense faced constant pressure throughout the contest, finishing with just 50 rushing yards and 213 total yards while converting only three of 11 third-down attempts. The defeat marks only the second time the Chiefs have scored three points or fewer with Mahomes under center, with the previous instance occurring against the Tennessee Titans in October 2021.

The loss drops the Chiefs to a 5-1 record as they look ahead to a divisional matchup against the Denver Broncos. Meanwhile, the team faces mounting questions regarding its offensive line and injury-depleted roster, as well as the immediate need to stabilize its kicking game moving forward.
