Roma Secures Crucial Win Over Genoa Amid Defensive Resurgence
Gian Piero overhauled AS Roma bounced back from a challenging winless streak to defeat Genoa over the weekend.
AS Roma secured a much-needed victory against Genoa over the weekend, putting an end to a difficult run of three consecutive winless matches across both the Italian Serie A and the Champions League. Gian Piero Gasperini's squad entered the weekend fixture under pressure following a tough 4-3 home defeat against the team led by Jose Mourinho.
Despite missing key players due to injuries, including star forward Paulo Dybala and goalkeeper Mile Svilar, the Giallorossi demonstrated notable defensive resilience. In Svilar's absence, goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini has retained his place, backed by a defensive unit that has drastically limited opponent opportunities. Gasperini expressed strong confidence in Gollini, noting that the goalkeeper has matured and earned a national team call-up.
Defensive solidity has become a defining characteristic for Roma during this stretch. Across matches against Como, Genoa, and Slovan Bratislava, the team recorded three clean sheets. Notably, in recent fixtures against Genoa and Slovan Bratislava, Roma conceded only a single shot on target.
Defender Mario Hermoso has continued to contribute effectively both in scoring and defending according to the coaching staff's tactical demands. Teammate Ghilardi also emphasized the importance of defensive focus, stating that avoiding goals conceded is a primary objective the squad constantly strives for.
The victory against Genoa keeps AS Roma fully engaged in the race for the Serie A title, currently placing them second in the league power rankings. Gasperini and his players are determined to maintain their defensive stability as they prepare for a crucial upcoming away match against Napoli, aiming to stay within touching distance of the top of the table.
Conversely, Genoa has faced a disappointing start to the season under manager Daniele De Rossi. With only one win recorded in their first seven games of the campaign, expectations have not been met, leaving the team searching for answers to turn their form around.
