Roma Overcomes Early Cagliari Penalty to Take 2-1 Halftime Lead in Serie A

Niccolò Pisilli atoned for conceding a spot kick by scoring the go-ahead goal before the break.

Roma mounted a spirited first-half comeback at the Stadio Olimpico on Tuesday evening, taking a 2-1 lead over Cagliari into the interval in their Serie A Matchday 9 encounter. After falling behind to an early penalty, Gian Piero Gasperini's squad answered with two quick goals to seize control of the contest in the Italian capital.

The match got off to a difficult start for the home side when Cagliari took the lead ten minutes into the contest. Referee Ermanno Feliciani awarded a penalty kick to the visitors following a video assistant referee review that penalized Roma midfielder Niccolò Pisilli for a handball inside the area. Forward M'Bala Nzola stepped up to the spot and beat Roma goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini with a left-footed strike to put the Sardinian club ahead.

Unshaken by the deficit, Roma responded swiftly through wing-back Lulli. Lulli slipped into the penalty area to connect with a cross from Nahuel Molina, directing a header past Cagliari goalkeeper Elia Caprile to make it 1-1. Roma capitalized on their offensive momentum shortly thereafter, as Lulli turned provider and sent a cross toward Pisilli, who tucked the ball home with the inside of his right foot. The strike was Pisilli's fourth goal of the campaign and erased his earlier mistake.

Gasperini's side dictated play through much of the opening period, holding 62.3 percent of the possession and generating 11 total shots, four of which forced saves from Caprile. Cagliari remained dangerous on the break with eight shot attempts of their own, but Roma defender Konstantinos Koulierakis made multiple critical interventions to disrupt Nzola in front of goal. Gollini also denied a close-range effort from Michel Adopo, with Lulli deflecting another attempt by Nzola into a corner to preserve the lead.

Roma entered the match with substantial squad rotation due to fixture congestion and injuries, leaving forward Donyell Malen on the bench while navigating absences to Paulo Dybala, Mile Svilar, Manu Koné, and Lorenzo Pellegrini. Santiago Castro was handed the start at striker, supported by Matías Soulé and Bryan Cristante. Gasperini explained his selection approach before kickoff, noting, "When there are so many matches close together, there are going to be knocks and concerns, it is not the same thing as playing once a week. At the same time, it gives us an opportunity to spread the responsibility around and boost the confidence of many players in a competitive squad."

Gasperini also praised Castro's recent form, noting that "Castro played two games ago and was decisive. We need to keep all our players in top shape." The Roma manager anticipated a structured opponent under Cagliari coach Fabio Pisacane, stating, "I expect Cagliari to remain positive, albeit with a more defensive set-up, but still ready to go on the counter-attack. We have to be wary of the pace of Alieu Fadera and M'Bala Nzola, but they have important options off the bench too. We've got to play with a high tempo, quality, and also clear heads."

Roma came into the fixture sitting third in the Serie A standings with 21 points, aiming to keep pace with Inter Milan and Lazio after a thrilling 3-3 draw against Napoli. Cagliari, positioned ninth with 13 points, arrived seeking to halt a two-match losing streak following consecutive shutouts against Monza and Bologna. Despite taking the early lead through Nzola, the visitors faced a steep challenge against an undefeated Roma side that maintained control through the first 45 minutes.
