Roma Reflects on Heartbreak Against Real Madrid

AS Roma sporting director Tony D'Amico focuses on the positive aspects of the team's performance despite a stunning late collapse.

AS Roma sporting director Tony D'Amico is choosing to reflect on eighty minutes of spectacular play rather than the final score following a devastating defeat against Real Madrid. The Giallorossi are still trying to recover from a 4-3 loss in the UEFA Champions League where they squandered a commanding 3-1 lead.

The match turned dramatically when Real Madrid mounted a comeback after trailing by two goals. The turning point arrived with the introduction of Endrick off the bench, who helped ignite the Spanish giants as they scored three practically identical goals from corner kicks in the span of just seven minutes.

Speaking to Sky Sport Italia, D'Amico addressed the unusual collapse. 'Those seven minutes were unusual, they left us breathless,' D'Amico said. He added, 'This is the Champions League, it is a very difficult competition, but we also remember 80 spectacular minutes played by the team. As with every game, whether it is a win or a defeat, you have to analyse everything and not just the result.'

Despite the disappointment of the result, the club executive emphasized that the performance contained numerous positive elements. Roma has experienced a challenging start to the European campaign, having also opened with a 1-1 draw away against Fenerbahce, increasing the urgency for their upcoming fixtures.

The Italian side has had to navigate several roster limitations due to injuries. Key players such as Paulo Dybala, Manu Koné, and Mile Svilar have been sidelined, prompting manager Gian Piero Gasperini to rely on youth academy products like Niccolò Pisilli and Emanuele Lulli.

D'Amico praised the integration of younger players, noting that the squad handled the quick turnaround well following the demanding fixture in Madrid. Looking ahead to the winter transfer window, D'Amico declined to comment on whether Roma would renew their pursuit of Brazilian forward Endrick on loan, stating that the focus remains on the current squad.

'That is a long way in the future, so we want to concentrate on ourselves right now,' D'Amico noted. 'We'll try to do our best in January to give the coach and squad more resources for the many games we're going into.'
