Richard Riehle, a dependable character actor whose prolific career spanned nearly five decades across television and film, has died at the age of 78. His death on October 15 was announced on Monday by Wright Entertainment Inc., though no specific cause or details were disclosed.

Riehle established himself as a recognizable and versatile presence on screen, frequently portraying authoritative figures while remaining equally adept at comedy. His extensive filmography included dramatic and comedic roles alike, such as playing a quartermaster in the Civil War film 'Glory,' a prison guard in 'The Fugitive,' an air marshal in 'Executive Decision,' and a police officer in an episode of 'The West Wing.'

Born in Wisconsin, Riehle fell into acting as a senior at the University of Notre Dame when a single semester of speech and drama credits offered an affordable way to complete his education. He subsequently earned a Master of Fine Arts degree through a teaching assistantship at the University of Minnesota, launching a long career in theater and on screen.

His motion picture credits featured appearances in notable projects such as Woody Allen's 'Shadows and Fog,' 'Black Rain' alongside Michael Douglas, the broad comedy 'Bridesmaids,' and his early film work in the 1977 movie 'Joyride.' In addition to his screen work, Riehle performed on Broadway on three occasions, including a 1999 revival of 'The Iceman Cometh' alongside Paul Giamatti.

Science fiction fans also recognized him from multiple contributions to the 'Star Trek' franchise, where he secured roles in 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' in 1992, 'Star Trek: Voyager' in 2000, and 'Star Trek: Enterprise' in 2004. On television, he portrayed Walt Finnerty on the sitcom 'Grounded for Life' and a high school principal in the TV adaptation of 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off.'

Among his most beloved cinematic contributions was his performance in Mike Judge's 1999 cult comedy 'Office Space.' Riehle played Tom Smykowski, an expendable Initech product manager facing layoffs who famously insisted to corporate consultants that he possessed 'people skills,' and who later conceived the ill-fated 'Jump to Conclusions' mat after receiving a settlement from a car accident.

Following the announcement of his passing, fans took to internet platforms like Reddit to honor his legacy by posting numerous variations of quotes and references to his iconic role as Tom Smykowski. Wright Entertainment paid tribute to his character off-screen as well, stating that he would be remembered for his genuine kindness and unwavering support of emerging actors and filmmakers.
