Kylian Mbappe Leads Real Madrid to El Clasico Victory Over Barcelona
Real Madrid defeated Barcelona 2-1 on Sunday at Camp Nou, cutting the league leaders' advantage to three points in the standings.
Real Madrid secured a 2-1 victory against arch-rivals Barcelona in a tense El Clasico clash at Camp Nou on Sunday. French superstar Kylian Mbappe scored twice to lift Jose Mourinho's side, handing the league leaders their first domestic defeat of the 2026-27 campaign and reducing their advantage at the top of the standings to three points.
Mbappe opened the scoring just before halftime when Barcelona defender Gerard Martin attempted to clear a cross, inadvertently deflecting the ball straight to the Real Madrid forward for his 10th league goal of the season. The strike gave Los Blancos a 1-0 lead heading into the break after a cagey opening period in Catalonia.
Barcelona responded strongly in the second half. Brazilian forward Raphinha leveled the score just after the hour mark, firing a shot through Jude Bellingham's legs past substitute goalkeeper Andriy Lunin following a pass from Pedri. The goal marked Raphinha's 13th of the season, maintaining his position as La Liga's top goalscorer.
As both teams pushed for a winner, it was Real Madrid that capitalized late in the match. Substitute Eduardo Camavinga raced onto a pass and drove into the box before cutting the ball back to Mbappe, who tucked it into an empty net in the 87th minute to seal the 2-1 win. The milestone goal brought Mbappe's total to a century since joining Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024.
Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho praised his squad's discipline and execution following the match. "My team had an extraordinary game, very organised, good concentration, with courage to play out from the back against a team that presses you a lot," Mourinho told reporters.
On the other side, Barcelona coach Hansi Flick acknowledged his team's shortcomings after suffering their second consecutive defeat across all competitions, following a Champions League loss to Paris Saint-Germain earlier in the week. "You saw today, we lacked freshness," Flick said. "It's the first defeat in La Liga, we won nine in a row. This is what we have to see. Defeats are a part of the game."
The result leaves Barcelona at the top of the La Liga standings, followed closely by Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid in third place. Real Madrid will look to maintain their winning momentum next week when they face Racing Santander, while Barcelona aims to regroup after a difficult week.
