Ravens QB Lamar Jackson Exits Game Against Bills with Right Thumb Injury

Baltimore was forced to turn to its emergency quarterback after both Jackson and backup Tyler Huntley suffered injuries during the matchup.

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson left Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills after sustaining a right thumb injury on the team's first offensive play. Jackson took contact on his throwing hand following a pass, experienced immediate pain, and walked straight to the locker room. The Ravens quickly ruled him out for the remainder of the contest.

The early exit compounded quarterback troubles for Baltimore, which was already playing without several key contributors. Backup quarterback Tyler Huntley took over for Jackson but was sidelined in the second quarter due to a toe injury sustained during a tackle. Huntley was initially listed as questionable before being ruled out at halftime.

With both of their top signal-callers sidelined, the Ravens turned to undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano as their emergency third-string quarterback. Fagnano, who signed with Baltimore as a free agent out of Connecticut, had never previously played an NFL snap. According to NFL rules, if Fagnano had been forced to leave the game, running back Justice Hill would have been the next player up at the position.

Jackson returned to the Baltimore sideline after halftime wearing street clothes and a protective brace on his thumb. The two-time NFL MVP was playing in his first game back after missing three weeks due to a high-ankle sprain sustained in Week 4 against the Tennessee Titans.

The latest setback marks another difficult chapter for Jackson and a Ravens franchise aiming to contend for a Super Bowl championship. Over his nine-year career, Jackson has missed numerous games due to various ailments, including a significant ankle sprain in 2021 and a PCL knee sprain that sidelined him for the conclusion of the 2022 season and the playoffs.

Jackson also dealt with a hamstring strain, a back contusion, and other physical issues during the 2025 campaign. As Baltimore awaits further medical evaluations on Jackson's throwing hand, the potential for another extended absence creates renewed uncertainty for the team's championship aspirations.
