NFL Suspends Two Buffalo Bills Players Following Raiders Game

Defensive backs Chauncey Gardner-Johnson and Sam Franklin Jr. face one-game suspensions for separate spitting incidents.

The Buffalo Bills are dealing with unexpected disciplinary issues coming off their Week 6 victory against the Las Vegas Raiders. Following the game, the National Football League handed down suspensions to two key defensive backs for unsportsmanlike conduct involving spitting incidents on the field.

Defensive back Chauncey Gardner-Johnson was the first player disciplined by the league for a spitting incident during the matchup. Shortly after, it was revealed that teammate Sam Franklin Jr. would join him in facing a one-game suspension for a similar violation.

According to reports from ESPN's Adam Schefter, the league penalized Franklin for unsportsmanlike conduct stemming from a spitting incident against Las Vegas. The twin suspensions leave the Bills defense facing significant depth challenges ahead of their upcoming schedule.

While the team enjoys a bye week to rest, the disciplinary actions threaten to sideline both defensive backs for the Week 8 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens. If the suspensions are upheld, Buffalo will be forced to adjust its defensive rotation significantly.

Despite the league's ruling, Franklin denies the accusations against him. NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported that Franklin plans to appeal the suspension in an effort to clear his name and avoid missing the critical contest following the bye week.

Should both players remain unavailable for Week 8, the Bills will likely rely on a safety rotation featuring Damar Hamlin, Jalon Kilgore, and Cole Bishop. The unusual situation leaves the team scrambling to prepare its secondary for a tough stretch of games.
