The Portuguese government is actively working to secure a new automotive manufacturing plant, aiming to strengthen the nation's position within the global vehicle production landscape. Minister of Economy Manuel Castro Almeida confirmed that the administration is currently in discussions with potential investors to explore the possibility of establishing a new factory in Portugal.

During a recent interview on the 'Conversa Capital' program, Minister Castro Almeida acknowledged that while he cannot yet announce a finalized deal, the government is committed to fostering an environment conducive to such industrial growth. He described the ongoing interactions with prospective investors as a 'fruitful dialogue' with the Portuguese public administration.

Portugal already maintains a significant automotive footprint, anchored by major facilities such as the Volkswagen AutoEuropa plant in Palmela and the Stellantis factory in Mangualde. These sites play a crucial role in the national economy, with over 98 percent of the vehicles produced domestically destined for export markets, thereby providing a substantial boost to the country's trade balance.

The push to attract new manufacturers comes at a time when the European automotive industry faces significant headwinds. While some established European brands are grappling with production challenges and potential facility closures, Chinese manufacturers are increasingly looking to expand their industrial presence within Europe. This shift is partly driven by the implementation of new tariffs on electric vehicles imported from China.

Although the Minister of Economy did not disclose the names of specific companies involved in the current discussions, there has been long-standing speculation regarding interest from Chinese automakers. The manufacturer BYD, for instance, has previously been linked to potential expansion plans in the region, though the company is also developing production capabilities in Hungary and considering other European locations such as France and Spain.

The Portuguese government remains optimistic about its competitive standing. Minister Castro Almeida emphasized that Portugal is working to be on the map for these global manufacturers, noting that the country is creating the necessary conditions to welcome such investments. He also addressed concerns regarding regional competition, asserting that Portugal has not lost potential manufacturing opportunities to neighboring Spain.

As of now, no specific details regarding the timeline, location, or scale of a potential new facility have been released. The government continues to focus on its strategy of positioning Portugal as an attractive hub for automotive investment, aiming to build upon its existing industrial infrastructure and export success.
