Philadelphia 76ers Praise Dean Wade Following NBA Cup Win Over Knicks
Teammates and star players highlight the defensive contributions of Dean Wade after securing a crucial victory to open NBA Cup play.
PHILADELPHIA -- Every championship contender needs a dependable player willing to handle the dirty work on the court, and for the Philadelphia 76ers, that role belongs to Dean Wade. Following a 98-93 victory over the New York Knicks in the opening game of NBA Cup play, several prominent teammates singled out Wade for his vital impact despite a quiet night on the official score sheet.
Filling in for the injured Jaylen Brown on Friday evening, Wade logged 26 minutes of action without taking a shot. He finished the contest scoreless while recording two rebounds, one assist, and three steals. However, looking past the basic statistics reveals a massive defensive performance that dictated the flow of the game.
Throughout the matchup, Wade was tasked with guarding multiple elite opponents, rotating seamlessly from Knicks star Jalen Brunson to Karl-Anthony Towns and OG Anunoby. Teammate Tyrese Maxey praised the relentless effort after the final buzzer, stating that it felt like Wade was everywhere on the floor.
Maxey expressed deep appreciation for the veteran forward's versatility and willingness to embrace any role required by the coaching staff. Whether he is asked to start, play limited minutes, or lock down opposing superstars like Brunson and Towns, Maxey noted that Wade consistently delivers the right plays.
Superstar LeBron James also offered high praise for Wade following the victory, emphasizing that a traditional box score cannot measure winning basketball. James pointed out that Wade consistently puts himself in the right position to secure extra possessions and disrupt opposing offenses.
Recalling previous evaluations from training camp and the preseason, James reiterated his belief that Wade is an ideal roster addition for any franchise in the league. According to James, Wade's commitment to making fundamental winning plays makes him an asset to any team pursuing a title.
With the opening victory secure, the Philadelphia 76ers look ahead to the next challenge on their schedule, preparing to face the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday on the second night of a back-to-back. As the grueling 2026-27 NBA season continues, performances anchored by unheralded contributors like Wade will remain central to the team's overarching strategy.
