Anfernee Simons Leads 76ers Bench in Win Over Knicks
Simons scored 21 points off the bench to help Philadelphia secure a 98-93 victory against New York in an NBA Cup matchup.
Guard Anfernee Simons delivered a standout performance on Friday night, leading the Philadelphia 76ers bench with 21 points in a 98-93 victory over the defending champion New York Knicks at home. Playing in an NBA Cup Group Play game, the 76ers improved their early-season record to 5-1 while dealing the Knicks their fourth loss in six games.
Philadelphia took the floor without starting guard Jaylen Brown, who was a late scratch due to left patellar tendinopathy. With Brown sidelined, head coach Nick Nurse adjusted his rotation, inserting Dean Wade into the starting lineup while relying heavily on the team's depth to withstand the challenge from New York.
Simons seized the opportunity to expand his offensive role, shooting efficiently from the field and connecting on five three-pointers. His production included a crucial scoring burst late in the third quarter, where he hit three shots from beyond the arc, a pair of free throws, and a fadeaway jumper to help the Sixers maintain a 77-68 lead heading into the final period.
Reflecting on his performance after the game, Simons expressed satisfaction with his output and credited his teammates for keeping his confidence high. "It was great. Long overdue, especially in this building," Simons said. "I'm just excited I was able to get going. My teammates have been encouraging me to keep shooting, keep shooting. I knew it was going to fall."
The game featured a tense fourth-quarter battle as New York mounted a comeback. Karl-Anthony Towns fueled a fourth-quarter surge, and Jalen Brunson gave the Knicks a brief one-point lead with 1:32 remaining by sinking a three-pointer. However, Philadelphia responded decisively with a late 9-3 run to seal the win.
LeBron James and Tyrese Maxey anchored the closing stretch for the hosts, combining for 57 points. Maxey led all scorers with 27 points and four assists, while James contributed 20 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists, capped off by a crucial putback basket with 11.9 seconds left. VJ Edgecombe also added 13 points, including a clutch three-pointer in the final minute that beat the shot-clock buzzer.
For the Knicks, Brunson led the charge with 24 points, five rebounds, and six assists, while Towns finished with a double-double consisting of 22 points and 12 rebounds. Despite their efforts, New York could not overcome Philadelphia's defensive intensity and bench scoring.
The victory moves the 76ers to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in NBA Cup play. Philadelphia will look to continue its strong momentum on the second night of a back-to-back when they face the Charlotte Hornets on the road, while the Knicks prepare to host the Brooklyn Nets.
