Philadelphia 76ers Host New York Knicks in NBA Cup Opener

The Philadelphia 76ers host the New York Knicks on Friday night at the Xfinity Mobile Arena for the opening game of East Group B in the NBA Cup. The two Atlantic Division rivals previously faced each other on opening night, October 20, when Philadelphia secured a 106-100 victory.

Entering Friday's contest, the 76ers hold a 4-1 record and a steadier start to the season, with their only loss coming against the Detroit Pistons. Meanwhile, the Knicks have climbed to a 2-3 record after opening their campaign with three consecutive losses.

The 76ers will face a significant roster challenge as wing Jaylen Brown has been ruled out of the game. Brown, who is averaging 20.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game, was initially listed as questionable due to left knee soreness before being downgraded to doubtful and ultimately ruled out with left knee patellar tendinopathy.

Philadelphia head coach Nick Nurse noted that Brown experienced soreness following Wednesday's victory in Indiana and missed Friday's shootaround. Nurse indicated he may turn to Dean Wade or Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to fill Brown's spot in the starting lineup.

The matchup also features a renewal of the rivalry between Joel Embiid and Karl-Anthony Towns, as well as a heavy load carried by New York guard Jalen Brunson. Brunson was named the tournament MVP during last season's NBA Cup, which concluded with the Knicks capturing the title.

The NBA Cup features all 30 league teams divided into six groups of five, playing four group games each. In addition to group standings, these matchups count toward each team's regular-season record, with group winners and the best second-place finishers advancing in the tournament.

Friday's game is broadcast exclusively on Prime Video with no national television coverage. Following this contest, the 76ers face a quick turnaround before traveling to play the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday evening.
