Patriots Star Christian Gonzalez Active for Thursday Night Football Against Bears
New England cornerback Christian Gonzalez is active to face Chicago after being listed as questionable with an illness.
New England Patriots star cornerback Christian Gonzalez is active for Thursday Night Football against the Chicago Bears despite dealing with a sudden illness that left him listed as questionable. The availability of Gonzalez provides a major boost for a New England secondary that entered the prime-time matchup facing significant depth concerns.
Prior to the game, Gonzalez spoke to reporters about the unique challenges posed by the Chicago offense, specifically highlighting dynamic quarterback Caleb Williams. "It obviously all starts with Caleb. Dynamic quarterback. Can make any type of throw. Running to his left, he can throw 50 yards back to the right. So, I mean, he's an amazing player. Amazing quarterback," Gonzalez stated.
Williams enters the matchup following an impressive performance against the Atlanta Falcons that earned him the NFC Offensive Player of the Week award. In that game, the quarterback threw for 305 yards and one touchdown while completing 83.3 percent of his passes. Discussing his efficiency, Williams noted that it comes down to building confidence with his targets. "I've said multiple times, it's building confidence in my wide receivers and where they'll be, even if I can't see them. It's putting the ball where they will be and just trusting them," Williams explained.
Gonzalez also warned about the depth and talent surrounding the young quarterback in Chicago. The Bears feature a group of playmakers that includes wide receivers Rome Odunze and Luther Burden III, tight end Colston Loveland, and running back D'Andre Swift. "And then they have a full receiver tandem of Rome, Luther, and Loveland. They got a lot of talent on offense. They're explosive, they score a lot of points, move the ball well. It's gonna be a challenge for us, especially in the secondary. But we look forward to it and we're excited for it," Gonzalez said.
The challenge for the Patriots' defense is heightened by several defensive absences. New England entered the contest with three cornerbacks sidelined due to injury: Carlton Davis III, Channing Canada, and Karon Prunty. Davis is dealing with a neck injury, while Canada and Prunty are both out with hamstring issues. Furthermore, offensive guard Ben Brown is out with a knee injury.
For the Chicago Bears, cornerback Tyrique Stevenson is active despite dealing with a hip injury. Meanwhile, Chicago's inactive list features running back Kyle Monangai, cornerback Nick McCloud, offensive lineman Jordan McFadden, defensive tackle Jayden Loving, linebacker Jack Sanborn, linebacker T.J. Edwards, and emergency third quarterback Case Keenum.
Heading into the game, Gonzalez has allowed a 58.2 passer rating and just 8.3 yards per reception across 234 snaps, according to Pro Football Focus. The New England defense currently surrenders an average of 18.8 points per game, ranking fifth in the NFL, as they look to slow down Chicago's high-powered aerial attack in this crucial inter-conference matchup.
