Al Michaels Faces Growing Retirement Calls After Blunder on Thursday Night Football

The veteran broadcaster drew fresh criticism from NFL fans following a phantom fumble call during the matchup between the New England Patriots and the Chicago Bears.

Calls for legendary broadcaster Al Michaels to retire have intensified following another notable error during Amazon Prime Video's Thursday Night Football broadcast. During the game between the New England Patriots and the Chicago Bears, the 81-year-old commentator mistakenly announced a fumble that never occurred while running back Corey Kiner was being tackled.

The incident took place during the first quarter as the Patriots faced a second-and-seven in their own territory. As defenders piled onto the runner, Michaels declared, 'And, the ball comes out,' even though New England maintained clear possession of the football. Viewers immediately took to social media to criticize the mistake, adding fuel to an ongoing debate regarding whether the veteran announcer should step away from the booth.

This latest slip adds to a growing list of misidentifications and subdued calls attributed to Michaels during the current NFL season. Earlier mistakes include confusing Atlanta running back Bijan Robinson with Brian Robinson Jr., misstating the college alma maters of players like Michael Penix Jr. and Mason Graham, and mistaking Denver returner Marvin Mims Jr. for Marvin Jones. Furthermore, fans have frequently pointed out a lack of traditional energy in his play-by-play delivery.

Michaels, who has served as the lead voice for Thursday Night Football since 2022, has operated on a year-to-year contract basis. Addressing his future on the Dan Patrick Show, Michaels remarked that he would recognize when the time is right to exit. 'And if they feel it's time, great. And if I feel it's time, I'll know it. And I'll say, "You know what? Thanks for the memories,"' he stated.

While Michaels bore the brunt of the criticism for his on-air miscues, his boothmate, Kirk Herbstreit, also faced heavy scrutiny from viewers during the game at Soldier Field. Some fans argued that Michaels' well-documented struggles have inadvertently overshadowed shortcomings in Herbstreit's analysis. Critics targeted several of Herbstreit's game-management observations, with some social media users questioning his fit alongside the veteran play-by-play caller.

As Amazon Prime Video's broadcast team navigates ongoing fan dissatisfaction, the future of its premier NFL commentary crew remains a subject of considerable discussion. With Michaels' contract status set to be evaluated and viewers voicing frustration over the overall broadcast product, the network faces mounting pressure to address the quality of its weekly coverage.
