The cinematic universe of Panem is expanding once again as Lionsgate prepares for the nationwide theatrical release of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. Scheduled to hit theaters on November 20, the upcoming prequel is based on Suzanne Collins' bestselling novel of the same name and transports audiences back to the Second Quarter Quell, set nearly twenty-four years before the events of the original film trilogy.

The upcoming film features a blend of fresh faces and established actors portraying younger iterations of familiar characters. Joseph Zada takes on the leading role of a young Haymitch Abernathy, while Mckenna Grace stars as Maysilee Donner. Other notable additions to the ensemble include Elle Fanning as a young Effie Trinket, Glenn Close as Drusilla Sickle, Ralph Fiennes as Coriolanus Snow, and Jesse Plemons as a younger Plutarch Heavensbee.

Original franchise star Jennifer Lawrence recently opened up about reuniting with her former costars Josh Hutcherson and Woody Harrelson to discuss the production. During a podcast appearance, Lawrence described the experience of returning to the franchise as deeply emotional. She noted that stepping back onto the set felt remarkably familiar, working alongside the same crew and camera operators from the original movies.

Lawrence praised her returning costars, joking about Harrelson's familiar antics and highlighting the strong bond she shares with Hutcherson. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Banks, who originally portrayed Effie Trinket in the series, voiced her enthusiastic support for the new prequel after viewing an early screening. Banks singled out newcomer Joseph Zada for high praise, calling his performance fantastic and noting that he serves as a perfect counterpart to Harrelson's iconic mentor role.

Zada, a relatively unknown twenty-one-year-old actor, faces significant pressure carrying the franchise as the teenage Haymitch navigates the deadly arena during the Second Quarter Quell. Unlike some of his co-stars such as Fanning, Plemons, and Kieran Culkin, who plays a younger Caesar Flickerman, Zada steps into the spotlight with only two previous feature films under his belt, making initial endorsements from franchise alumni all the more crucial.

The sprawling supporting cast also features Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird, Ben Wang as Wyatt Callow, Molly McCann as Louella McCoy, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Maya Hawke as District 3 victors Beetee Latier and Wiress. Lili Taylor rounds out the mentor group as Mags Flanagan, guiding the young tributes through a particularly brutal iteration of the annual games.

With anticipation building ahead of its November premiere, Sunrise on the Reaping promises to shed light on the dark history of Panem while offering longtime fans a nostalgic yet expanded look at the origins of its most defining characters.
