James Bond Franchise Faces Casting Speculation and New Audio Drama
As Amazon MGM Studios weighs its options for the next cinematic 007, the spy franchise expands with a vulnerable take on a teenage James Bond and a former Bond girl's new television series.
The future of the iconic cinematic secret agent remains a subject of intense discussion as industry insiders point to actor Jack Lowden as a leading contender to portray James Bond next. Following a final round of screen tests at Bray Studios near London, the 36-year-old actor known for his work in Slow Horses has emerged as a frontrunner among bookmakers, outpacing fellow contenders such as Callum Turner and Josh O'Connor. Producers are reportedly evaluating candidates to succeed Daniel Craig, whose tenure as 007 concluded with No Time to Die in 2021.
Charlie Higson, a James Bond novelist who penned the first five Young Bond books alongside adult entries like On His Majesty's Secret Service and King Zero, expressed skepticism regarding some fan favorites in an interview with The Times. Comparing Lowden's physical profile to Daniel Craig's rugged screen presence, Higson noted, "With Daniel Craig you can believe him kicking the s*** out of someone. And you've got to believe that with Bond." Higson also suggested that while the character could be portrayed by a Black actor, making Bond a woman would miss the point of the character's exploration of traditional manhood.
Despite the heavy speculation surrounding established and lesser-known names, including potential dark horses like Jack Barton and Joe Alwyn, Higson predicted that any official casting decision by Amazon MGM Studios will inevitably trigger a strong reaction from moviegoers. "Whatever the answer, everyone will be very angry when they find out," Higson stated.
While film fans wait for news regarding the next cinematic installment, the spy universe is expanding through other mediums. Big Finish recently released a new audio drama adaptation of SilverFin, the inaugural novel in Higson's Young Bond book series. The project presents a 13-year-old James Bond attending Eton and uncovering a mystery during a Scottish holiday.
Voice actor Isaac Rouse, who brings the teenage secret agent to life in the audio production, explained that the role offers a unique perspective on the famous character. "That is part of the unique joy of this story, that we get an opportunity to take Bond to a more vulnerable place where he is a boy," Rouse said. He added that this iteration lacks the ruthless calculation of the adult spy, providing audiences with "a Bond you can empathise with in a new way, because he’s vulnerable in ways he hasn’t been before."
The audio adaptation also features Charlotte McBurney as Wilder Lawless, alongside Higson himself portraying Michael Merriot, an Eton classics tutor and mentor to the young protagonist. Supervising producer Lizzie Worsdell praised the project's foundation, noting that Higson's novels provided an ideal framework for a full-cast audio drama.
Meanwhile, former Bond girl Gemma Arterton is stepping back into the espionage genre with the television thriller Secret Service. Created by Tom Bradby, the five-part series stars Arterton as an MI6 agent navigating high-stakes international political conspiracies, offering viewers a gritty narrative loosely echoing the classic spy formula.
