New Zealand Defeats Fiji 78-0 to Secure Rugby League World Cup Semifinal Spot
The dominant victory propels the Kiwis into the next round, where they will face the winner of the match between Tonga and Samoa.
New Zealand secured a commanding 78-0 victory over Fiji at Cbus Super Stadium on Australia's Gold Coast, booking their place in the Rugby League World Cup semifinals. Head coach Stacey Jones credited his team's fast start for the dominant performance, noting that the physical battle was established right from the beginning of the match.
The Kiwis established a commanding 48-0 lead by halftime, crossing the try line eight times in the opening forty minutes. Halfback Jahrome Hughes opened the scoring in the second minute, quickly followed by tries from Keano Kini, Casey McLean, and Dane Gagai as New Zealand raced to four tries within the first 12 minutes.
Casey McLean finished the match with four tries, while Jamayne Isaako successfully booted all 13 conversion kicks for the Kiwis. New Zealand captain James Fisher-Harris praised his squad's execution, stating after the game that they were very pleased with how they went about their business against a formidable Fijian side.
Fiji struggled to replicate the resilience they showed in their previous match against Australia. Fijian head coach Wise Kativerata acknowledged the immense challenge his players faced, pointing out that they were up against a professional organization and a top-tier roster featuring numerous NRL players.
The match grew increasingly physical and heated in the second half, resulting in disciplinary action from referee Grant Atkins. New Zealand winger Ronaldo Mulitalo was sent off for a forceful high shoulder hit on Fiji's Ronald Philitoga, after which Fiji halfback Brandon Wakeham struck Mulitalo in the head while he was on the ground, earning himself a red card as well.
Compounding Fiji's difficulties, captain Apisai Koroisau was forced to leave the field in the ninth minute due to a head knock and suspected broken jaw. Despite being reduced to 12 men following the red cards, Fiji continued to battle through the remainder of the fixture, though New Zealand added five more tries in the second half to complete the shutout.
With the win, New Zealand finishes group play and advances to the semifinals scheduled for November 7 in Newcastle. They will face the winner of the upcoming pool fixture between Tonga and Samoa.
