New York City Prepares for Major Street Closures Ahead of Annual Marathon
The Upper West Side and Central Park face extensive traffic restrictions and parking bans as thousands of runners and spectators converge for the race.
The New York City Marathon is set to take over the city on Sunday, bringing extensive road closures, parking bans, and crowd control measures that will particularly impact the Upper West Side and Central Park areas. With the finish line located inside Central Park, the surrounding neighborhoods serve as the primary staging ground for the event, leading to significant disruptions for local traffic and daily routines.
The restrictions begin early Sunday, with the Men’s Wheelchair Division starting at 8 a.m. However, the impact on transportation will linger long after the final runner finishes, with major avenues and park drives remaining closed until late evening. City officials have advised residents and visitors to avoid driving in the affected zones and to budget significantly extra travel time if movement is necessary.
Unlike other neighborhoods along the course that experience temporary closures as runners pass through, the Upper West Side bears an extended burden due to the post-race activities. The neighborhood hosts the official Family Reunion area, situated on West 69th through 71st streets between Columbus Avenue and Central Park West. Operating from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., this designated zone is expected to draw heavy crowds of finishers and their families.
Central Park itself is completely off-limits to vehicular traffic. The East, West, and Center drives closed ahead of the weekend and will remain shut through Sunday. Additionally, key crosstown transverses, which normally provide the quickest routes across Manhattan, are unavailable for most of the day. The 65th Street and 79th Street transverses are closed from midnight until 9:30 p.m., while the 96th Street transverse shuts down from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Major north-south corridors face the heaviest restrictions. Central Park West features the longest continuous closure, shutting down from Columbus Circle to 81st Street from midnight through 10:30 p.m. Other stretches of Central Park West, Columbus Avenue, and Broadway are scheduled for extensive daytime closures running from early morning until late evening, making the area surrounding Lincoln Center and Columbus Circle especially difficult to navigate by car.
Strict parking regulations accompany the street closures. Parking is prohibited through Sunday on several blocks of Central Park West and on the connecting streets between Central Park West and Broadway. Vehicles left in these zones risk being ticketed or towed as the city clears the thoroughfares for marathon participants and emergency vehicles.
City officials have published comprehensive maps and schedules of the closures online, encouraging attendees to utilize walking or the subway system rather than attempting to drive. With proper planning and designated meeting spots, residents and spectators can navigate the bustling environment while minimizing delays during one of New York City's signature annual events.
