The popular German television series Der Usedom-Krimi is set to return with a new feature film titled Wunschkind, scheduled for release in 2026. The narrative centers on Karin Lossow, a former prosecutor who has recently begun providing legal assistance to a local family support organization. Her work leads her to cross paths with Nathalie Schrader, a young woman desperate to regain custody of her daughter, Greta, who has been living with a foster family for several years.

The situation takes a dark turn when the foster father is found murdered, prompting investigators Rainer Witt and Ellen Norgaard to launch an official inquiry. As the investigation unfolds, the detectives initially focus on the legal firm associated with the foster parents, but the case quickly becomes complicated. Karin finds herself deeply embedded in a tangled web of relationships involving Nathalie, the biological grandmother, and the foster family, forcing her to navigate a difficult moral and legal dilemma.

Hannah Schiller, who portrays the distraught mother Nathalie Schrader, noted that the role offered a unique opportunity to explore complex maternal dynamics. In an interview, Schiller expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, 'I was looking forward to playing a mother with Nathalie Schrader because I had only done it once before, and that child was represented by a doll. I really wanted to experience the mother-child relationship with a real child.'

The production faced environmental challenges during the early stages of filming, with Schiller describing the freezing temperatures as a notable hurdle. Despite these conditions, the actress maintained that the experience was manageable. Her performance in this film follows a series of recent roles in other German dramas, where she has frequently portrayed young women characterized by both volatility and vulnerability.

The film features a returning cast including Katrin Sass as Karin Lossow, Till Firit as Rainer Witt, and Rikke Lylloff as Ellen Norgaard. The script was written by Dinah Marte Golch and Isabell Serauky, with Matthias Tiefenbacher serving as director. The production aims to blend the tension of a traditional crime procedural with the emotional weight of a high-stakes custody battle.

Viewers will be able to access Wunschkind through the ARD Mediathek starting October 19. The film promises to deliver a compelling narrative that examines the intersection of family law and criminal justice, as the characters struggle to reconcile their personal convictions with the demands of the law.
