Fans of German television mysteries can finally watch a new installment of the popular series set on the Baltic Sea island of Usedom. After a one-year wait, the first of three brand-new episodes, titled "Doppelmord," premieres on Thursday evening in Germany. The dramatic series, which began in 2014, consistently draws high viewership ratings across the country.

The 28th episode centers on former prosecutor Karin Lossow, played by renowned actress Katrin Sass. In the latest plot, Lossow is surprised at her home by Anja Wiesznewski, portrayed by Steffi Kühnert, who has just completed a 15-year prison sentence. Wiesznewski was previously convicted of killing her husband in a circumstantial trial without a body, but the plot thickens when her husband is suddenly found murdered on Usedom under a different identity.

As local investigators, including Kriminalhauptkommissarin Ellen Norgaard played by Rikke Lylloff and Rainer Witt played by Till Firit, look into the case, Wiesznewski quickly becomes a primary suspect. Lossow finds herself sympathizing with her former cellmate, putting her own friendship with Norgaard under emotional strain. The story ultimately leads to a dramatic showdown on the Zinnowitzer pier.

Director Joana Vogdt leads the production of the episode, which features a script by Natalie Zoghbi. The narrative explores complex interpersonal relationships, a hallmark of the series. Lylloff noted that portraying enduring friendships that survive heavy conflicts remains a vital and socially relevant aspect of the television program.

Following tonight's broadcast, viewers will not have to wait long for the subsequent chapters. The episode "Mörder unter uns" is scheduled to air on October 29, followed by the landmark 30th anniversary episode, "Wunschkind," on November 5. Additional streaming availability typically follows later through various platforms.

The return of the mystery series coincides with a personal milestone for its leading star. Katrin Sass marks her 70th birthday this week. Reflecting on her decades-long career, which includes acclaimed roles in "Good Bye, Lenin!" and "Weissensee," the multi-award-winning actress expressed gratitude for continuing to receive prominent television parts despite industry challenges regarding age.
