Miriam Neureuther Reflects on Biathlon Career and Media Coverage

The former biathlete and mother of four discussed her athletic highs and shooting struggles during an appearance on a prominent German talk show.

Former professional biathlete Miriam Neureuther recently appeared on the WDR talk show "Kölner Treff" to look back on her athletic career, addressing the intense media scrutiny she faced during her active years. Known for her exceptional speed on the cross-country trails, Neureuther frequently struggled at the shooting range, a paradox that routinely made headlines throughout her career.

Hosted by Susan Link and Micky Beisenherz, the Friday night broadcast featured Neureuther alongside other notable guests, including comedians, musicians, and television veterans. During the conversation, the 36-year-old athlete reflected candidly on her performance with the rifle and acknowledged that some of the critical press coverage was justified.

"Fairness dictates that one must admit: I was not the best shooter," Neureuther explained during the show. She highlighted that biathlon presents a unique and demanding challenge in balancing two entirely different disciplines. While her athletic talent was evident from her youth, her difficulties at the shooting range often overshadowed her speed.

Looking back at specific moments, Neureuther recalled the 2013 World Championships mass start in Nove Mesto, where she was positioned in second place heading into the final shooting stage with a clear chance at gold. However, she missed three targets on the 11.5-centimeter marks, ultimately falling out of medal contention altogether.

Despite frequently facing harsh headlines and critical commentary in the press, Neureuther stated that she learned to channel the negative feedback into extra motivation rather than letting it defeat her. "I thought to myself: I will show you that I can do better," she noted, adding that she earned certain critical headlines while finding ways to stay positive.

Since concluding her competitive skiing career in 2019, Neureuther has shifted her focus toward family life with her husband, former skiing star Felix Neureuther, and their four children. Alongside managing family routines, she occasionally participates in television programs, runs an annual running camp, and recently authored a family and holiday book titled "Pine Tree Scent and Glittering Snow."
