Television Host Birgit Schrowange Opens Up About Her Hearing Aid
The 68-year-old television personality shared how her son encouraged her to get her hearing tested.
Television host Birgit Schrowange recently spoke openly about her experience with hearing loss and how adopting a hearing aid has significantly improved her daily life. The 68-year-old media personality admitted that realizing her hearing had declined came as a surprise to her at first.
The journey toward getting assistance began when her son, Laurin—whom she shares with her former partner Markus Lanz—suggested she look into the issue. According to Schrowange, her son told her to get her ears tested because he believed she needed a hearing aid.
Initially, the television star resisted the idea, assuming that her hearing was fine and that other people were simply mumbling or speaking too softly. However, after reflecting further, she realized her son was right.
Schrowange recalled specific everyday moments with her husband, Frank Spothelfer, that highlighted the problem. She noted that they frequently needed to turn on subtitles while watching movies because she could no longer follow the dialogue properly. She also confessed to occasionally laughing awkwardly at jokes she had failed to understand.
Deciding to take action, Schrowange obtained a hearing aid, which immediately made a noticeable difference in her routine. She explained that she no longer has to strain to listen, noting that her facial expression is more relaxed and people around her have noticed she asks fewer questions.
Although she initially struggled with accepting her hearing impairment, Schrowange now discusses the topic openly. She has also served as a brand ambassador for the hearing acoustics company KIND since 2025.
On a personal note, Schrowange and her husband moved to Munich in 2025, drawn by the proximity to the mountains and Italy. She is also preparing for a public appearance in the city, where she will discuss her career, her new life, and reinvention at any age.
