Millonarios and América de Cali Draw in Goalless Match at El Campín
Despite recording 26 shots, Millonarios failed to secure a victory against a resilient América de Cali side in the Colombian league.
Millonarios and América de Cali played to a scoreless draw at the Nemesio Camacho El Campín stadium in Bogotá during a match for the 17th round of the 2026 Liga BetPlay II. The result left Millonarios still searching for a definitive spot in the upcoming quadrangular stage, while América de Cali maintained its strong standing in the tournament.
The home side dominated the offensive statistics, registering 26 shots throughout the match, with eight of those on target. Despite the heavy pressure and the introduction of key attacking players like Leonardo Castro and Andrey Estupiñán, the team was unable to break the deadlock. Millonarios coach Alberto Gamero expressed his frustration with the final score but praised his team's performance, stating, "It was not the result we expected, but it was the performance we wanted from the team."
Gamero, who remains a person of faith, reflected on the outcome by noting, "If God sent us this point, I accept it. He sent us this point, or he sent us this point, we accept it. But it seems to me that today the team did important things, did good things, and went out onto the field to win the match against a great team." The draw marked a significant defensive improvement for Millonarios, as the team managed to keep a clean sheet after conceding goals in their previous four matches.
On the opposing side, América de Cali coach David González acknowledged the difficulty of the match, particularly during the first half when his team struggled to find their rhythm. "There were 25 or 30 minutes where we were not comfortable, what was practiced in defense did not come out, and as a result, distrust arrived," González explained. He added that the team had to shift its focus toward defensive stability in the second half to secure the valuable point.
The condition of the playing surface at El Campín also became a point of contention following the match. América defender Nicolás Hernández criticized the state of the grass, suggesting it hindered the quality of the game. "It is a main stadium in the country and it should not be in these conditions, as it does not lend itself to good football. The stadiums are supposed to be for playing football and, if they are not well, it is difficult to give a good show," Hernández remarked.
Looking ahead, Millonarios faces a critical stretch to secure their place in the postseason. With 26 points, the team must perform well in their remaining fixtures, including a challenging upcoming match against Deportes Tolima in Ibagué on November 8. Meanwhile, América de Cali continues to focus on maintaining its position at the top of the table, having already secured its qualification for the next phase of the competition.
