Quarterback Tommy Carr led the Wolverines past Rutgers at SHI Stadium while discussion mounts regarding the future of head coach Greg Schiano.

Michigan secured a 28-21 victory against Rutgers at SHI Stadium on Saturday, October 31, overcoming critical penalties and defensive lapses behind a standout performance from quarterback Tommy Carr. Despite a strong effort from the Scarlet Knights, who knotted the game in the fourth quarter, Carr orchestrated a decisive 11-play, 75-yard touchdown drive to put the Wolverines ahead for good.

Carr completed 22 of 27 passes for a career-high 266 yards and one touchdown while connecting with nine different receivers. His mobility proved vital as he added two rushing scores, including a 9-yard touchdown run with 4:24 remaining in regulation. Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham and offensive coordinator Jason Beck relied heavily on Carr's ability to move the sticks, converting a season-best 12 of 16 third-down attempts.

Early on, Michigan capitalized on its first two drives to build a 14-3 lead before Rutgers capitalized on mistakes. The Scarlet Knights pulled close when Antwan Raymond broke off a 54-yard run that set up a Clay Thevenin score and a successful two-point conversion, tying the game at 21-11 with 11:43 left to play. However, Rutgers punted with 3:17 remaining and failed to regain possession as Michigan ran out the clock.

Away from the gridiron, the Rutgers football program faces broader questions regarding its long-term direction amid a difficult season. Although speculation has mounted concerning the future of longtime head coach Greg Schiano following on-field struggles and a challenging start in the expanded Big Ten, a coaching change remains financially complicated for the university.

Industry reports indicate that dismissing Schiano without cause would incur buyout obligations between $17.3 million and $18.5 million, excluding assistant coach contracts. Operating under a reported $78 million athletic department deficit for the 2024-25 fiscal year, university leadership faces immense financial barriers should it pursue a complete coaching transition.

If the athletic department were forced to conduct a coaching search, analysts point to several potential candidates to lead the Scarlet Knights. Notable names include Syracuse head coach Fran Brown, known for his deep recruiting ties in New Jersey and the Northeast, alongside veteran coaches such as Brian Kelly, Jason Eck, Joe Harasymiak, and Dana Holgorsen.

For now, Rutgers continues to navigate its current schedule under Schiano while evaluating paths toward greater competitiveness within the Big Ten conference landscape.
