Meteorological Shifts Expected Across Portugal and Argentina During Long Weekend
Severe weather alerts in Madeira and shifting conditions in Argentina mark a period of significant atmospheric instability.
Residents in Portugal's Madeira archipelago are bracing for a period of intense weather as the 'Bruna' depression approaches. The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued orange and yellow weather warnings, forecasting persistent and heavy rainfall that may exceed 90 millimeters over the course of two days. The most significant precipitation is expected between late Saturday and early Sunday morning, accompanied by potential thunderstorms.
In addition to the heavy rain, wind conditions are set to deteriorate significantly starting Saturday. Meteorologists expect moderate to strong winds blowing from the south, with gusts reaching up to 90 km/h in most areas and potentially hitting 110 km/h in mountainous regions. Coastal areas are also facing increased maritime turbulence, with wave heights expected to rise from one or two meters to between three and four meters by Sunday.
On the Portuguese mainland, a significant weather transition is underway. Following a period of dry and sunny conditions, a humid and mild air mass originating from the Caribbean is expected to arrive. This phenomenon, described by geographer Alfredo Graça as an 'atmospheric river,' is projected to bring widespread and persistent rain starting Friday, November 6. The most severe conditions, including heavy rain and strong winds, are anticipated between Sunday, November 8, and Tuesday, November 10.
Across the Atlantic, Argentina is also preparing for a period of varied weather conditions during a long holiday weekend. A cold front is currently moving across the central part of the country, bringing showers and storms to regions including La Pampa, San Luis, and Buenos Aires. By Saturday, November 7, temperatures are expected to drop significantly, with some areas in the southwest of Buenos Aires province potentially experiencing agricultural frosts as temperatures dip toward 3 degrees Celsius.
The weather remains a focal point for the ongoing visit of Pope Leo XIV to the region. While Saturday is expected to be challenging in Paysandú, Uruguay, with rain and storms, conditions are forecast to improve for the Pope's arrival in Buenos Aires on Sunday. The National Meteorological Service (SMN) anticipates clear skies and cooler temperatures for the Sunday welcome, with a minimum of 9 degrees Celsius and a high of 23 degrees Celsius.
Looking ahead to the start of the week, Monday, November 9, is expected to be the most favorable day for outdoor events in Buenos Aires, with clear skies and temperatures reaching up to 24 degrees Celsius. However, meteorologists advise caution regarding extreme UV levels during midday ceremonies. By Tuesday and Wednesday, uncertainty remains regarding potential isolated storms in Córdoba and Luján, as weather models continue to monitor the movement of unstable air masses across the central provinces.
