Marcus Spears Jr. made an immediate and notable impact in his college basketball debut on Monday night, helping the seventh-ranked Texas Longhorns secure a dominant 109-59 victory over the Chicago State Cougars at the Moody Center in Austin. Coming off the bench, the 17-year-old freshman forward recorded 11 points, five rebounds, and four blocked shots in front of 10,892 fans.

Spears' journey to the court was captured live on television, drawing an emotional reaction from his father, former NFL player Marcus Spears, who watched the broadcast from Seattle during an ESPN appearance. Meanwhile, Spears' mother, Aiysha, a former LSU and WNBA player, and his sister Cari, a standout on the Texas volleyball team, were among the family members in attendance.

Standing 6-foot-9 with a 7-2 wingspan, Spears showcased his athleticism and defensive presence quickly. Second-year Texas head coach Sean Miller praised the freshman's performance while noting areas for development. "Marcus was outstanding with his quickness, his athleticism," Miller said. "He had a couple of mistakes defensively and found out if you pressure your guy far from the basket, you also have the responsibility for keeping him in front of you."

Because of his birthdate in April 2007, Spears will not turn 18 until April 2027, making him ineligible for the upcoming 2027 NBA Draft. Under NBA rules requiring players to be at least 19 during the calendar year of the draft, Spears must play at least two collegiate seasons before turning professional, ensuring he will remain with the Longhorns through the 2027-28 season.

Spears was part of a talented group of newcomers that fueled the Longhorns' season-opening rout. Matas Vokietaitis led Texas with 22 points on a perfect 9-for-9 shooting performance, while Colorado transfer Isaiah Johnson added 18 points. Freshmen Austin Goosby and Joe Sterling also contributed significantly, with Sterling scoring 14 points behind four three-pointers and Goosby adding seven points, seven rebounds, and eight assists.

The Longhorns controlled the game from the opening tip, shooting 62.5% from the field and building a 56-30 halftime lead. Texas never trailed, cruising to its 25th consecutive home opening victory while demonstrating the depth and versatility of a roster featuring 11 newcomers.

Reflecting on his debut and the support of his family in the stands, Spears expressed excitement about his start with the program. "It was super cool," Spears said. "We've been through a lot of hard days, long days, but it's starting to show. I've got a lot of stuff I've got to fix."
