Manchester United secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over Roma at Old Trafford on Tuesday, staging a second-half comeback that ended the club's nine-game winless run. The win provided a significant reprieve for manager Michael Carrick, whose position had been under intense scrutiny following a series of poor results.

The match began poorly for the hosts, who fell behind 2-0 within the first 20 minutes. Matias Soule opened the scoring for Roma, followed by a penalty conversion from Donyell Malen after a handball by Ayden Heaven. The early deficit led to protests from home supporters, who threw tennis balls onto the pitch and chanted against the club's ownership, the Glazer family.

United's momentum shifted in the second half after captain Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty at the second attempt. The initial spot-kick was saved by Roma goalkeeper Devis Vasquez, but the referee ordered a retake due to encroachment. Shortly after, Matheus Cunha capitalized on a defensive error by Leonardo Balerdi to equalize, before scoring the decisive third goal with a powerful strike.

Despite his heroics, Cunha’s night ended prematurely when he received a second yellow card in stoppage time for a reckless challenge. The Brazilian had previously been booked for his celebration after scoring the winning goal. Despite being reduced to 10 men, United successfully defended their lead to record a vital win in their Champions League campaign.

Manager Michael Carrick praised the resilience of his squad following the final whistle. "This place does incredible things, does magical things," Carrick said. "I spoke with them at half-time a little bit about how this place can change and it only takes one moment. It certainly did that and the boys made every little bit of every little opportunity. Fantastic in the end."

Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini expressed disappointment at his team's inability to maintain their early advantage. "A game lasts 90 minutes," Gasperini noted. "They stepped it up in the second half but we could have done more to safeguard the score." The defeat marks another collapse for the Italian side, which had previously surrendered a 3-1 lead to Real Madrid last month.

The match also saw injury concerns for Manchester United, as new signing Carlos Baleba was substituted early in the second half with a suspected severe hamstring injury. While the victory provides a temporary boost, Carrick acknowledged that the team must build on this performance to ensure long-term stability. "It's one game, so it depends on what happens next and we've got to capitalise on that," he added.
